Powerful earthquake rocks Indonesia

Powerful earthquake rocks Indonesia Hundreds of homes reportedly damaged

tsunami alert canceled

msnbc.com news services

updated 8:05 a.m. ET, Wed., Sept . 30, 2009

JAKARTA, Indonesia - A major earthquake struck off the city of Padang on the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island on Wednesday, damaging houses, bringing down bridges and starting fires, a witness said.

It was unclear if there were any casualties, but witnesses told local television that hundreds of houses had come down and telephone lines were not working.

The quake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 7.6, according to the U.S. Geological Survery, was felt around the region, with some high-rise buildings in the city state of Singapore, 275 miles to the northeast, evacuating their staff. Office buildings also shook in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center canceled an earlier tsunami warning. Japan said no tsunami was expected there.

"Hundreds of houses have been damaged along the road. There are some fires, bridges are cut and there is extreme panic here maybe because water pipes are broken and there is flooding in the streets," said a Reuters witness in the city.

Padang, the capital of Indonesia's West Sumatra province, sits on one of the world's most active fault lines along the "Ring of Fire" where the Indo-Australia plate grinds against the Eurasia plate to create regular tremors and sometimes quakes.

A 9.1 magnitude quake, with its epicenter roughly 373 miles northwest of Padang, caused the 2004 tsunami which killed 232,000 people in Indonesia's Aceh province, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, and other countries across the Indian Ocean.

The depth of Wednesday's earthquake was measured at 53 miles, the USGS said.

A series of tsunamis earlier on Wednesday smashed into the Pacific island nations of American, Western Samoa and Tonga, killing possibly more than 100 people, some washed out to sea, destroying villages and injuring hundreds.

A city under constant threat
Geologists have long said Padang, with a population of 900,000, may one day be destroyed by a huge earthquake because of its location.

"Padang sits right in front of the area with the greatest potential for an 8.9 magnitude earthquake," said Danny Hilman Natawidjaja, a geologist at the Indonesian Science Institute, in February.

"The entire city could drown" in a tsunami triggered by such a quake, he warned.

Several earthquake-prone parts of the country hold tsunami practice drills, and the national disaster service sends alerts via telephone text messages to subscribers.

Infrastructure lacking
But some experts have long said Indonesia needs to do more to reduce the risk of catastrophe.

Padang needed to invest in better infrastructure, including more roads and other escape routes, said Hugh Goyder, a consultant for the United Nations' International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, earlier in the year.

"The road goes parallel to the coast, which means it's difficult in some areas to get away from the coast," Goyder said, adding that in one part of the city, the only escape route is a narrow bridge.

Sumatra is home to some of the country's largest oil fields as well as its oldest and smallest liquefied natural gas terminal, although there were no immediate reports of damage to those facilities.

7.9 magnitude quake hits off American Samoa

7.9 magnitude quake hits off American Samoa

  • Tsunami reportedly hits capital after temblor centered southwest of islands
  • NBC News and news services
  • updated 3:45 p.m. ET, Tues., Sept . 29, 2009

WASHINGTON - A tsunami struck the capital of American Samoa on Tuesday after an offshore earthquake that U.S. government agencies said registered 7.9 magnitude.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage.

Fili Sagapolutele, who works at the Samoa News, says water flowed inland about 100 yards before receding, leaving cars stuck in mud.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, a branch of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii, Papua New Guinea and other Pacific Islands after the quake hit about 120 miles southwest of the remote Pacific island of American Samoa. It struck at a depth of 20.5 miles.

The bulletin estimated a tsunami, if powerful enough to reach Hawaii, would reach the island state approximately 1 p.m. local time (7 p.m. ET).

The warning was issued because a quake of this magnitude had the power to generate a destructive tsunami, the warning center said.

In 2004, a 9.0 quake in the Indian Ocean generated a powerful tsunami that killed tens of thousands people in Asia.

The representative from American Samoa to the U.S. Congress, Eni Faleomavaega, told NBC News that quake hit between the North Marianas Islands and American Samoa, creating 10 to 15- foot waves in populated low-lying areas like Pago Pago Bay.

"Cars were seen floating," the congressman said of Pago Pago Bay.

He said there will likely need to be mass evacuations of low-lying areas and there will be requests for assistance from Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

He said he didn't have any reports on injuries.

The U.S. State Department also said there was no word of American casualties or evacuees.

Surrounded by family and close friends, Justin Guarini married Reina Capodici at a private estate in his hometown of Doylestown, Penn., early Saturday evening, Guarini's rep Jeff Ballard confirms exclusively to PEOPLE.

Guarini, 30, the runner-up to Kelly Clarkson in the first season of American Idol, and his new bride, 27, attended high school together but only started dating after reconnecting in the past few years.

The intimate wedding was presided over by a female minister from the Universalist Church and included vows the couple wrote themselves. Guarini's stepdaughter Lola, 4, spoke during the ceremony. Music by Radiohead, Paramore and Peter Gabriel was performed by the Vitamin String Quartet.

"Justin is one of the most deserving people of happiness and love," Kimberly Caldwell, Guarini's co-host on the TV Guide Network's Idol Tonight, tells PEOPLE. "I know he will be an amazing hubby."

The couple were engaged in December while Guarini was at Disney’s EPCOT Center filming for the American Idol Experience ride at the Orlando theme park.

Guarini plans to return to the recording studio this winter to write and record his third CD.

TLC to lose Jon, go with 'Kate Plus Eight'

TLC to lose Jon, go with ‘Kate Plus Eight’

Reality show adapts to changes in Gosselin household with couple’s split

The Associated Press
updated 11:44 a.m. ET, Tues., Sept . 29, 2009

NEW YORK - “Jon & Kate Plus 8” will soon be simply “Kate Plus Eight.”

That’s the word from the TLC network, which announced Tuesday that its hit reality show is adapting to changes in the Gosselin household, which has been disrupted by the split up of Kate and Jon.

The renamed “Kate Plus Eight,” which begins Nov. 2, will continue to chronicle the lives of the Gosselin kids (5-year-old sextuplets and 8-year-old twins) but will also focus on Kate’s role as a single mother.

“It’s not a huge shift, but it’s reflective of where the show was already going,” said Eileen O’Neill, TLC’s president and general manager.

“Jon’s going to be involved in the show,” she said, adding that he will be seen less often than before. TLC retains an exclusive arrangement with him, as well as the rest of the family, O’Neill said.

The couple made their separation official on a “Jon & Kate” episode that aired in June and was seen by 10.6 million viewers.

The rupture came after weeks of tabloid reports of marital strains and infidelities, which both spouses denied. On the show, the parental co-stars barely spoke to each other.

Since then, media coverage of the squabbling exes has continued full-bore, and both Jon and Kate have made separate he-said-she-said talk-show rounds. They are in divorce proceedings.

It’s quite a change since the series clicked with viewers two years ago for its heartwarming look at the challenges of raising eight young children.

Going forward, O’Neill said, “We hope for the sake of the family that things are more manageable. I don’t think anyone asked for that amount of attention.”

She spoke hopefully of a bright future for the series and dismissed a report circulating Tuesday that Kate Gosselin had posted a tweet that this season might be the last: Kate doesn’t have a Twitter account, O’Neill said.

Although the audience for recent “Jon & Kate” airings has dropped below two million viewers, the current season has averaged a robust 3.2 million (even omitting its two record-setting “event” episodes), which represents an increase of 300,000 viewers over last season.

Discussions are under way with Kate Gosselin for another series that might debut in 2010, O’Neill said.

“I think there’s an opportunity for Kate beyond her role as a supermom to explore her other interests,” O’Neill said.

Meanwhile, with reality-based programming that also includes “Little People, Big World,” “What Not to Wear” and “LA Ink,” the network is boasting a year of consecutive month-to-month audience gains.

“We’re not a one-hit wonder,” O’Neill said.

The series airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT.
