CNN's King says he's ending show after 25 years

CNN's King says he's ending show after 25 years

By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer

David Bauder, Ap Television Writer

NEW YORK – Larry King, who has interviewed statesmen and stars from a prime-time perch at CNN for 25 years but has seen his ratings sag recently, said Tuesday that he will step down this fall from his nightly show.

"It's time to hang up my nightly suspenders," King said in a message sent to fans via Twitter.

King said he will do occasional specials for CNN. He recently reached his 25-year anniversary and takes pride in a Guinness Book of World Records citation for hosting the longest-running show on the same network in the same time slot.

The long-time radio host was a pioneer in cable television, his desk considered a valued spot to sit for anyone interested in talking to the nation. King's interview style was plain-spoken and critics would suggest occasionally ill-prepared, but he was good at making his guests feel comfortable and ready to talk.

King said he felt no pressure from CNN to leave. He said he began thinking about stepping down as his 25th anniversary week ended earlier this month, on the airplane home after interviewing basketball star LeBron James. During that week, he also spoke to Bill Gates, President Barack Obama and Lady Gaga — an apt example of the mix that he always sought on his show.

"I said, `I can't top this,'" King said in an interview Tuesday.

"I'm tired of the nightly grind," he said. "I do want to do other things but I want to stay at CNN in some way ... There's a case of great mixed emotions."

King told his staff during a conference call Tuesday that he called "one of the saddest 10 minutes of my life."

As cable news audiences gravitated toward politically pointed shows and newsmakers found many more outlets for interviews, King slipped behind Fox News Channel's Sean Hannity and MSNBC's Rachel Maddow in the ratings. During his interview with Lady Gaga, the 76-year-old broadcast veteran had people wondering if he was really connecting with a pop star a half century his junior.

He's conducted an estimated 50,000 interviews during a 53-year broadcasting career.

He said he always tried to ask short questions, never come in with an agenda and "I left my ego at the door."

"I never learned a thing while I was talking," he said. "That would be my motto."

CNN is in the midst of remaking its prime-time lineup and last week announced that former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer and conservative columnist Kathleen Parker would co-host an 8 p.m. EDT show on politics and current events.

CNN executives often have said that when "Larry King Live" ends, it won't necessarily be replaced by a similar show. Recent published reports have suggested that "America's Got Talent" judge Piers Morgan could be a candidate for a show in that time slot. CBS' Katie Couric has been considered a potential successor, although that talk has cooled lately.

King said if it was up to him, Ryan Seacrest would be the best choice to fill his shoes.

He dismissed a series of stories this spring questioning his future and speculating about possible successors.

"You can't worry about things you can't control," he said. "I can't control if a newspaper is going to speculate about something or if a blog is going to speculate ... If I let it get me, I'll go nuts. So what I try to do, and I'm not being morbid, I just try to do the best show I can. If it works, it works."

King said he was able to see the baseball all-star games of his sons this weekend. If it was during the week, he'd miss them.

"I'm never going to see these again," he said. "They're not going to repeat themselves. They're 11 and 10. They're not going to be 11 and 10 again."

Serena in the semis

Serena Williams had a day of mixed emotions as she learned before her quarterfinal match that her sister Venus was upset. But, being the competitor that she is, she held her ground and defeated Na Li from China by a score of 7-5, 6-3. Now, Serena will be the heavy favorite to win Wimbledon, but first she'll have to best her next opponent in the semis, Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic. Good luck on Thursday, Serena!!!

Mahut to compete in Newport, R.I.

Associated Press

NEWPORT, R.I. -- A week after playing the longest match in tennis history at Wimbledon, Nicolas Mahut has landed a wild-card spot in a grass court event in Newport, R.I.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame announced Monday that Mahut will play in the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships running from July 5-11.

Mahut will also present memorabilia from his record-setting match against John Isner to the Hall of Fame's museum. Hall of Fame spokeswoman Anne Marie McLaughlin said she did know exactly what memorabilia would be presented.

Last week's 183-game match lasted 11 hours and five minutes over three days. Isner won 70-68 in the fifth set.

Mahut has competed four other times at Newport, and was a finalist in 2007.

Hanescu fined for spitting in match

Associated Press

WIMBLEDON, England -- Victor Hanescu was fined $15,000 by Wimbledon officials Saturday after spitting at hecklers in his third-round match.

The Romanian, who later apologized, was fined $7,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct after swearing and spitting in the direction of hecklers in the crowd on Court 18. He was fined the same amount for not using "best efforts" at the conclusion of Friday's match against Germany's Daniel Brands.

"There were people in the crowd that had been insulting me since the beginning of the match," Hanescu said in a statement issued by the ATP. "I lost my control briefly in the fifth set after another insult from someone in the crowd. I should have never done that, but I am human and I made a mistake."

Hanescu's fine is deducted from the $47,071 he earned for reaching the third round.

The Romanian foot-faulted and served a series of double faults in the final game of his match before retiring while trailing 0-3 in the fifth set.

He was issued a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct earlier in the set.

Police arrested four youths at Court 18 about six minutes after the match finished, but the tournament could not verify whether the episodes were related.

Hanescu has 10 days to appeal. He was not entered in any of the Wimbledon doubles events.

Agent: Colon injury 'a nine-month rehab'

Pittsburgh Steelers starting right tackle Willie Colon's worst fears were confirmed Tuesday when medical tests revealed he has a ruptured right Achilles tendon. The injury will knock Colon out for the entire 2010 season.

"It's torn, and he's getting surgery [Wednesday] morning with [team physician] Dr. James Bradley," Colon's agent, Joe Linta, said. "He's expected to have a full recovery, and it's about a nine-month rehab."

Pittsburgh now has to look within the organization or sign a veteran free agent to replace Colon, who started every game for the Steelers the past three seasons.

Some internal options include moving offensive guard Trai Essex to right tackle, or playing backups Jonathan Scott or Tony Hills.

In terms of outside options, veteran offensive tackles Flozell Adams and Levi Jones are among free agents with starting experience that are available.

Venus eliminated in quarterfinal

ESPN.com news services

WIMBLEDON, England -- Five-time champion Venus Williams was eliminated in the Wimbledon quarterfinals Tuesday, losing 6-2, 6-3 to unseeded Tsvetana Pironkova.

Pironkova, the first Bulgarian woman to reach the semifinals at Wimbledon, will face Russia's Vera Zvonareva, who upset Kim Clijsters 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

This is the second time in three matches Pironkova, 22, has defeated Williams. She also beat her in the first round of the 2006 Australian Open. Pironkova has never moved past the second round in 18 previous Grand Slam appearances.

Pironkova, playing in her first Grand Slam quarterfinal, broke Williams twice in the first set and on consecutive chances in the fourth and sixth games of the second.

The second-ranked Williams, who had reached the Wimbledon final in eight of the past 10 years, was undone by 29 unforced errors and five double-faults against an opponent ranked 80 spots below her.

Zvonareva, seeded 21st, came back from a set down to win her second match point when Clijsters netted a forehand.

Clijsters, the No. 8 seed, won the first set after breaking the Russian in the eighth game, when Zvonareva had two forehand errors and a double-fault.

But the Belgian was broken four times by Zvonareva in the final two sets, putting the Russian into her first semifinal at the All England Club.
