Miss Universe runner-up trades tiaras for politics

Miss Universe runner-up trades tiaras for politics

2009 Miss Universe runner-up will serve as deputy mayor

The Associated Press

updated 9:30 p.m. ET, Tues., May 25, 2010

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - A beauty queen known as the Dominican Cinderella for her rise from humble roots is trading pageants for politics and will serve as deputy mayor of the region where she was born.

Ada Aimee de la Cruz, who was the 2009 Miss Universe runner-up, was voted to office on the ticket of Mayor Francisco Fernandez of the opposition Revolutionary Dominican Party in May 16 elections. She will represent Santo Domingo Norte, the country's fourth largest municipality with 445,000 residents.

"I'm here to shatter the myth that beauty queens are airheads," the 23-year-old told The Associated Press in a recent interview. "I want to help youth so they do not find themselves without anything to do because of a lack of plans and opportunities."

The 6-foot-tall beauty starts work Aug. 16 and will become the first former beauty queen to assume an elected position in this Caribbean nation.

She said she would promote education and sports programs for children in a municipality where only half are enrolled in high school and where the illiteracy rate is 10 percent among those older than 10, according to government statistics.

She said most schools in her municipality offer only a fifth-grade education.

De la Cruz also envisions creating work programs for impoverished women and promoting her hometown of Villa Mella for its popular pork products.

"We're going to build a pork rind park as a tourist attraction," she said.

De la Cruz recently earned an accounting degree and recalled how she worked since she was 16 in a women's clothing store to pay for her studies and transportation.

She was crowned Miss World Beach Beauty in 2007 and Miss Dominican Republic in 2009. She stepped down from that position a month before it expired.

"At 23 I have achieved all my goals. From here to 35 you never know, I might even reach the presidency," she said with a laugh.

Crystal Bowersox

I just finished watching 'American Idol' and I'd have to say, in my opinion, that the winner by far should be Crystal Bowersox. Her performance throughout the competition have been great, but tonight she shined better than Lee. She sang 'Black Velvet' extremely well and I'll probably download that one from Itunes. Good luck to both of them on winning the title, but I have already done my voting for tonight for Crystal!!

Could LeBron James' Mother Rumors Push Him Out of Cleveland?

Could LeBron James’ Mother Rumors Push Him Out of Cleveland?

By Dr. Boyce Watkins, PhD on May 24th

2010 10:41PM

The world seems to be buzzing incessantly

about the

NBA great Calvin Murphy

said that it’s true that LeBron James has

been noticeably upset about the

sleeping with teammate Delonte

West

BV. Been there, done that. Now, let’s move

on to what this really means in terms of

sports.

The biggest question in the minds of

most Cleveland Cavalier fans is not who

LeBron’s mother is sleeping with but who

LeBron will be dressing with next season.

With

this summer, the entire NBA could be

knocked on its side if he makes the predicted

leap to a bigger spotlight.

Quite a few NBA observers have taken

notice of LeBron’s friendship with the rapper

Jay-Z, who is part-owner of the

Jersey Nets. Yes that's nice, but I'm sure

LeBron has a lot of friends. The real power

player for the Nets might be the only friend

that matters for LeBron, and he’s probably

a guy you’ve never heard of.

Meet Mikhail Prokhorov

Prokhorov is not just a Russian billionaire

and true owner of the Nets, he is also a

man who likes to win. You don’t become a

billionaire by thinking small, and

Prokhorov has already made it clear that

he’s willing to spend whatever it takes to get

in to the winner’s circle and make his Nets

an international brand. Spending a lot of

money to win won’t make much of a difference

for LeBron, since he’s going to get

something close to the maximum contract

no matter where he goes. It does matter

that his boss is willing to do what’s necessary

to put winning talent around LeBron

to allow him to shine the way he was supposed

to shine several years ago.

Even better for LeBron is the fact that,

like Prokhorov, James has always had his

sights set on overseas opportunities. He

stopped hearts in the NBA a few years ago

by stating that he would even consider

playing overseas. At the very least, there is

evidence that he wants to see if his brand

can sell in other countries the way it does

here in the United States. Given that the

Nets have another team across the river

(the Knicks) that has also shown it is willing

to spend big in order to win, it’s almost a

given that you’re going to see James playing

somewhere in the Northeast next year.

Were it not for the pressure to leave, I’d

normally predict LeBron to stay home in

the Midwest. Growing up as an only child

with maturity beyond his years, LeBron has

always wanted to be a team player. For him

to leave the place he started will surely tear

at his heart, but there’s another part of his

heart that lives in the Big Apple, and

LeBron’s shine is simply too bright for the

economically and socially damp surroundings

he must endure in the Midwest. It’s

time for him to grow.

Manny Pacquiao treated for ulcer

Pacquiao being treated for ulcer

Associated Press

MANILA, Philippines -- World welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao was admitted to a hospital to treat a mild stomach ulcer and allow him to rest after campaigning for the May 10 congressional elections.

Pacquiao

Pacquiao's chief of staff, Jayke Joson, said Monday that doctors discovered the 31-year-old boxer had an ulcer during a routine checkup Sunday and his family convinced him to stay in a suburban Manila hospital for a few days.

"Really, Manny can only rest if you confine him to a hospital," Joson told The Associated Press, adding Pacquiao was receiving intravenous dextrose drips. "It's been so intense a campaign, he missed some of his meals."

Pacquiao's boxing promoters are working toward a possible bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr., or another fighter, as early as November.

Pacquiao's mother, Dionisia, told the AP her son was well and may be discharged from the hospital later Monday or Tuesday.

Pacquiao won a seat in the Philippine's powerful House of Representatives, which he will assume on June 30. Aside from preparing to enter the political arena, Pacquiao is yet to complete advertisements for products ranging from food to sports items, Joson said.

Promoter Bob Arum has said he'll soon start talking to Mayweather's camp about putting together the world's top two welterweights for a Nov. 13 bout in Las Vegas or Texas.

Arum said he hoped to match Pacquiao against former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito if talks with Mayweather fall through.
