Serena Williams is 2009 AP Female Athlete of Year

Playing her best at the most important events, Serena Williams re-established herself as the top player in women's tennis in 2009 and was a landslide choice as Female Athlete of the Year by members of The Associated Press.

Williams received 66 of 158 votes cast by editors at U.S. newspapers that are members of the AP. No other candidate got more than 18 votes in the tally, which was announced Tuesday.

Clearly, Williams' most infamous on-court episode — a tirade directed at a line judge after a foot-fault call near the end of her U.S. Open semifinal loss in September — didn't hurt her standing in the eyes of the voters.

"People realize that I'm a great player, and one moment doesn't define a person's career," Williams told the AP. "And I was right, for the most part: It wasn't right the way I reacted — I never said it was — but I was right about the call."

She also noted that the outburst, which resulted in a record fine and two-year probationary period at Grand Slam tournaments, "got a lot more people excited about tennis."

The 28-year-old American tends to do that, thanks to her powerful, athletic play and her outgoing personality.

"We can attribute the strength and the growth of women's tennis a great deal to her," WTA chairman and CEO Stacey Allaster said in a telephone interview. "She is a superstar."

Williams, who is based in Florida, also won the AP award in 2002, a seven-year gap that is the longest between AP Female Athlete of the Year honors since golf's Patty Berg won in 1943 and 1955.

"I'm just happy and blessed to even be playing seven years later. All this is a bonus, really," Williams said. "In 2002, I just was really dominant, and I think in 2009, I just brought that back. I kind of became that player again."

Runner-up in the AP voting was Zenyatta, who capped a 14-0 career by becoming the first female horse to win the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Tennis' Kim Clijsters finished third with 16 votes.

Well I guess my luck is about to elevate, because I have cats all around me and they always seem to show up when a bigg win is coming, just like the rainbows. Report: USC investigating McKnight's use of SUV

LOS ANGELES – Southern California is investigating tailback Joe McKnight's use of an SUV registered to a businessman, according to a newspaper report.

McKnight has been seen driving a 2006 Land Rover that state records indicate is registered to 47-year-old Scott Schenter, the Los Angeles Times reported in a story posted on its Web site Friday night. McKnight told the paper that he has never driven the SUV and it belongs to his girlfriend's boss.

"I know I can't drive cars I'm not supposed to," he said. "If somebody said they spotted me driving, they're seeing wrong. I don't even have the keys."

A company owned by Schenter had registered the domain name 4joemcknight.com, according to the newspaper report.

USC is already being investigated by the NCAA and Pac-10 regarding accusations that running back Reggie Bush and basketball star O.J. Mayo received improper benefits during their time at the school.

Schenter's wife, Dawn, told the Times he was in South Africa. Reached by e-mail, Schenter didn't respond to a list of questions sent by the newspaper, according to the report.

Todd Dickey, USC's senior vice president of administration, said school officials hoped to speak with Schenter when he returned.

"Compliance has this in a full review and so we'll have to wait and see what happens with that," coach Pete Carroll said. "I really can't tell you anything. I don't know anything more than that."

McKnight led USC with 1,014 yards rushing this season. The Trojans (8-4) will face Boston College (8-4) in next Saturday's Emerald Bowl.

McKnight said Wednesday his girlfriend, Johana Michelle Beltran, works as a secretary for Schenter, although the junior said he doesn't know him.

"I never talk to her about it," he said of the SUV. "I just see it whenever my girlfriend's around with my kid. I ask no questions. I just do what I got to do."

Rockets' Landry cracks five teeth

DALLAS -- A collision between Dirk Nowitzki and the Rockets' Carl Landry on Friday night left the Mavericks forward with a gashed elbow and Landry with five cracked or knocked out teeth.

 

Nowitzki and Landry left the Rockets' 116-108 overtime victory after Nowitzki's elbow caught Landry in the mouth as he drove to the basket early in the second quarter.

 

Landry was called for fouling Nowitzki as the eight-time All-Star drove hard to his left to set up a short jumper and caught Landry with his right elbow.

 

Landry was taken to an emergency room for treatment.

 

The Mavericks found pieces of two teeth imbedded in Nowitzki's elbow and had to spend 30 minutes cleaning the cut before adminstering X-rays, which were found to be negative.

 

The Mavericks have listed him as questionable for Cleveland on Sunday with a deep laceration in the elbow. An update to his status was expected on Saturday.

 

Nowitzki shot two free throws left-handed immediately after the play. By taking the free throws -- Nowitzki made 1 of 2 -- he remained eligible to return to the game.

 

But a return was ruled out entering the fourth quarter, with Nowitzki having received three stitches.
