The early years.
Prior to 1902, major White House renovations included rebuilding after the 1814 fire, adding the North and South Porticos, the lavish Gilded Age redecoration under the Grants in the 1870s, and Chester A. Arthur's 1880s Victorian-era updates. These earlier projects focused on structural rebuilding and lavish interiors, setting the stage for the 1902 Theodore Roosevelt renovation that created the West Wing and established a more modern, classical style.
Key renovations before 1902
Rebuilding (1814-1817): After the British set fire to the White House, the building was rebuilt under the direction of original architect James Hoban.
Portico additions (1824, 1829): Architect James Hoban added the South Portico in 1824 and the North Portico in 1829, giving the building its trademark look.
Gilded Age interior redecoration (1870s): President and Mrs. Grant oversaw a major redecoration in the Renaissance Revival style, including new furniture from Herter Brothers.
Chester A. Arthur's Victorian renovations (1881): This project included modernizations like an elevator and plumbing, as well as decorative elements like a stained-glass screen by Louis Comfort Tiffany and gilded Victorian details.
Conservatories (1870s-1880s): Various greenhouses for flowers and plants were added to the west of the main building.
