planed more lumber Sun 11/13

Published:

Before I went ahead and planed more panel boards to 7/16" I checked my biscuit cutter with the ones I had. HMMMM says I. I better make these boards for a finish thickness of 1/2". 3/8" finish is not thick enough says I.
I will use what little I have of 3/8" for the drawer lumber.
Planed out more of the stuff to finish 3/4" for the tops also.
Planed out the six legs to 1 1/4" square. Going to use four legs on the front of desk as I will have an opening for the my legs to fit in. The back I will have one leg in each corner with a continuous board the length of the table about 6" up on the legs. Will have a taper on the legs about 6" high. About a 1/4" taper. Will look for round metal adjusters to fit in the bottom of the legs.
still have more planing to do yet.
That large pile of 3 x 4 s has dwindled down quite a bit. A bit of wastage from cull lumber, [junk]
Planing takes out a lot of lumber by the time I plane it to size.
Have one trash can full and one 15 gallon leaf bag full of shavings already.
The lumber is looking good for the project.
until next weekend now.

This is a really cool project! I've been planing some lumber, myself. Have a 1911 front porch with tongue and groove floorboards ----- can't find that tongue and groove anywhere ..... so, I'm taking up the old floor boards and running them through the planer for reuse. This time, I'll caulk in all the grooves as they're put back together, as well as coating all sides in a mixture of boiled linseed oil and turpentine. Then, I'll caulk and cap off the end grain on the front of the boards, and hopefully get another 80 or 90 years of out the lumber.    Old wood is harder to work with, because I usually have to pre-drill it to keep it fron splitting.
