Thief can't resist lure of lottery tickets

North Carolina Lottery

A jackpot-seeking thief swooped into a south Raleigh convenience store early Saturday morning, grabbed a plastic dispenser filled with $1,100 worth of lottery tickets and then ran away, according to police.

"The guy just came into the store and talked to the clerk for a bit," said Dawda Jack, manager of the BP Amoco Station at 1969 Rock Quarry Road. "Then he pulled a whole rack of tickets from the counter. He walked out -- we had it on tape and everything."

Raleigh police said officers caught up with the man they believe to be the robber Sunday, after somebody started trying to cash in winners from the stolen ticket haul. Fred Wallace Richardson III, 38, of 1816 Malone Place in Raleigh was arrested Sunday and charged with larceny.

Richardson was being held in the Wake County jail in lieu of $11,000 bail.

Okay seriously! Did this NOT just happen a few weeks ago?!?! I'm with DD you can't fix stupid. It amazes me that they think they're going to be able to cash those in... just amazing. Although I'm sure it was fun to sit there and scratch them all off for nothing. When he goes to jail (assuming he does) I'll bet he'll be wishing for something to scratch off to pass the time...

bambini

Stupid or desparate for gas money!

NCPicks

Just STUPID.He wasn't ripping off the gas pumps.

DoubleDown

If you're gonna steal something, drive off with a tank of $3 per GL gas, not a roll of scratchers that they instantly void out...

I agree w/ Sass; He will have plenty of time to scratch , and I'm sure that there will be some place on him that itches.....

I mean really... and the worst they'll do to you on the gas is take your DL. Not stick ya in jail!

And yes whoever said it, I do think that Fred's the stupid one, I mean, yeah, he's going to get room and board for free... but he's also going to have nothing better to do but sit there and scratch paint off the walls....

Maybe he has an OCD problem, and he just can't handle not scratching the surface to see if anything else is there. Hell if he's there long enough, he can tell us what the cement bricks look like, and maybe some of those amazing muscles we have hiding under our skin. There's all kinds of time....

Some people are desperate and they will do anything for money. If these thiefs knew more about the lottery, they would realize that once the tickets are stolen they are void.

Most laws require the value of the theft to determine in part what the penalty will be. If you steal a 25cent bubble gum your not going to jail for five years. I veer from any person who labels a person "stupid".  Yes the guy did something without seeing the negative consequences, but I've yet to meet a person who is without that very characteristic.

In Indiana, stealing gas is now a Class D felony, and carries a penalty of six months (min) to three years (max) in state prison plus a $10,000.00 fine.

That's our legislature for you; if someone can't pay three bucks a gallon for gas, how is he supposed to pony up ten grand??? Their standard response to anything is to pass more laws making it illegal to break another law. They just don't seem to grasp the concept that criminals, by definition, are not law-abiding citizens...

SmashWhere did you get that figure$? I know some prisoners are more expensive than others (medications especially for AIDS/HIV) medical care but that seems high for a regular healthy inmate.

The biggest irony would be if he won a Lucky for Life type scratch. Instead he ends up with years in a PMITA prison. (Watch Office if you don't get the acronym)

The costs per prisoner are wrong. http://www.doc.state.nc.us/DOP/cost/index.htm shows the costs at around  $25k for what he will most likely get. Excluding any AIDS/drug rehab/cancer treatments that may or may not happen.

LOL Or, if it's a phony million-dollar NY scratch game (annuity-only).

That's how it goes with the Average Cost of Anything: Some are Higher some are Lower! Coffee

I've seen a special on the cost of NC prisoners.  I was just wondering where you got that figure.

This story is yet another example of why you may not want to name your children after yourself.

For the record, the reason you read similar stories week after week is that stupid people generally don't... read. So very few low-brow crooks would get concepts like time stamping, ticket block voiding and other authentication/security measures.

Set your bookmarks, there'll be another story like it here in the future.

Unless you want your son to have a Roman numeral after his last name, giving a child the same first name after his/her parent IMO is a bad idea.
