DC Lottery not paying winners during government shutdown

Washington, D.C. Lottery

If you are furloughed because of the shutdown and thought maybe a DC Lottery ticket might solve your problems, you are out of luck.

The DC Lottery announced Friday that they would not be paying out any winning lottery tickets until after the shutdown is over.

"Due to the federal government shutdown, the DC Lottery has suspended the redemption of winning DC Lottery tickets until further notice," reads a notice on the DC Lottery website. Winning tickets will be paid out after the shutdown.

If you have some cash to throw around, you can still buy lottery tickets, and drawings will continue as usual, but there will not be any immediate gratification if you win.

The government shutdown hits Washington particularly hard, as the city's government is funded by congressional appropriations, which have not happened for the new fiscal year as Democrats and Republicans continue their standoff.

Thanks to truesee for the tip.

To D.C.,

The Maryland and Virginia lotteries thank you for increasing our business.

-------------------

It's not like D.C. is that far away from other places to play.

if anyone has anything really significant to cash maybe they can wait it out - and then move.

I wonder if anyone is going to post the "D.C. Shutdown System" in Systems!

Hold up - what in the he** is wrong with these people?

FIRE THEM ALL.

They need to be booted out of <snip> office.

You know, not just for the lottery bs reported here but for the ENTIRE FIASCO they're pulling on the American people.

They need to be shipped out as soon as possible. No leadership is better than THIS leadership. I can't believe the stories

I see and hear on the radio all the time about the NEXT thing that is affected that wasn't supposed to be.

These clowns responsible for this need to pay.

What did the article say, I'm so mad, I believe it said you can buy tickets but not redeem them??

WHY PLAY??????

I'll be <snip>ed if I buy a ticket and need to hold it indefinitely until these clowns get their acts together.. LMFAO. BS.

FIRE THEM THEN THROW THEM IN JAIL. EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM.

oh come on DC!!! I feel embarassed to say I work in DC now. I decided to buy my PB and MM ticket at home in VA just to protest. So if I win, I will not be able to claim via a trust and everyone will know my name but I will get paid timely. VA has been on a roll with 2nd place winners anyway.

If they can make sales, collect the money, & make the drawings; they can pay out winnings.

Make it hurt the American people as much as possible. Unprecedented closures of open air parks and memorials, armed blockages of privately owned businesses leasing federal lands, etc etc. One side wants to negotiate on Obama's signature program, the other side says no negotiation - give us everything or nothing, we'll negotiate later i.e. "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today". What DC lacks is real leadership. That starts in the White House, and we sure aren't getting it from there.

This is just BS. Fire them all.

That shouldn't effect PB and MM players since those games have nothing to do with the Federal government.

RJOH,

Are you sure about that? You have to cash them where you bought them.

This seems to only be affecting winning tickets that have not yet been redeemed.  Those who are already receiving payments via annuity should be fine, but given that our income tax rates can only go upwards, I would be more inclined to take lump sum payout...and blow 5 percent right off the bat just to get big baller spending out the way. Then I would wisely invest the remaining 50 percent (Uncle Obama Sam will have taken his 45 percent cut), living off of the interest and dividends (capital gains would be reinvested).

It looks like less and less people are feeling proud about their president. Oh well, we have 3 more years to go, thanks for nothing.

Unbelievable!  Will probably cause a ripple effect across the country... hummm, wonder if the lottery officials still get paid...

I wish Tennessee Lottery would shut down for good, you see what we been dealing with for many years, then you would have something to complain about.

pickone4me's avatarpickone4me

All they have done is shutdown services to affect only us,  not them!  This is nothing but smoke and mirrors.  I would let it stay shut down,  and just to protest I would recommend everyone stop buying lottery tickets until they stop taking it out on us.

grwurston's avatargrwurston

What if you have winning tickets and the shutdown lasts longer then the "redeem by" date to get your money? Not likely to

happen, but the way it's going one never knows.

90% of the population thinks Congress is doing a lousy job. There is one thing that EVERYONE can do to change things.

That is, Register to Vote and on Election Day vote all of their sorry asses out of office!!!

Now, are we going to just sit around pissing and moaning or are we going to do something about it? It's up to everyone of us.

If we don't do this, it will just be more of the same old, same old, and we will have no one to blame but ourselves.

I see a big law suit in the making.  It's like saying "I am not going to pay any taxes due to the federal government until the shutdown is over."  What has the lottery to do with the Federal Government???????????  I would highly recommend any lottery player to buy their tickets in any of the neighboring States.  Hell, I live in Illinois & I can smell the bull#*#@* from the D.C. Lottery right here.

That sucks a monkey's hairy nutsack for DC players.  Though Maryland and Virginia players will welcome those players.  DC as a whole is smaller than Rhode Island, so it's not gonna be that much of a drive.  It's still worse than a two or three minute jog to the nearest conveinence store, but yeah.

dr65's avatardr65

Somehow this idea will be catchy. Who will be the next state to follow suit?...or is this just because it's DC? I highly doubt it.

Keep more for themselves by saying they can't pay out yet keep collecting? WHO does that? I hope those that can't travel won't

play and those that can travel go elsewhere.
