JAMAICA, Queens — A Staten Island, New York, man came forward Thursday to officially claim a $245.6 million Powerball jackpot.

Nandlall Mangal, 42, was the sole winner of the August 11 drawing.

Mangal said he purchases his tickets when the jackpots reach $100 million.

"I was grocery shopping and knew the Powerball jackpot was big," he said. "I decided that was a good time to buy my tickets."

Mangal purchased a $6 Quick Pick ticket for that night's drawing and left it on his kitchen table.

"The ticket sat on my kitchen table for a week because I was out of town," he said. "I checked the website when I got back and was surprised that I won the jackpot."

Staten Island's newest multi-millionaire claimed his prize in the form of a trust. On behalf of The Sea & Sand Trust, he has chosen to receive his Powerball prize as a one-time lump sum payment totaling $99,321,975 after taxes.

"Shocking," he said. "Right now, I just plan to relax and see where it goes from there."

Mangal did say he plans to use a portion of his winnings to travel.

"I've always wanted to go to Hawaii," he said.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Stop & Shop on Hylan Boulevard in Staten Island. He claimed his prize at Resorts World Casino in Queens.

Mangal is the 91st New York Lottery player to claim a prize totaling $1 million or more this year.

I would take the two girls next to him.  Heck, he could be the next Dan Bilzerian.   Except no drugs or anything.  I like his interview.

He left the ticket on his kitchen table for a week while he was out of town! Shocked He was lucky he wasn't broken into during that time.  Easy grab for a thief.  I keep my tickets safe.  Jeez, $100million, that's a real nice win.  That should last him his whole life time.  It would me.

Congratulations Nandlall Mangal!!  I believe that his lawyer standing behind him is Jason Kurland. The famous lottery lawyer. Money well spent on legal advice and general lottery info.

I checked my records and found that the Cash Lump Sum that a Californian would have won was $93,000,000.00  California does not charge State taxes on lottery winnings. New York has the highest taxes on lottery winnings. According to USAMEGA N.Y. State = 8.82%  City = 3.876% Yonkers = 3.23%

Yes, if you have the travel bug and the means to do it than why not.

Most everyone who wins the jackpot, has a fantastic story to tell, as to how they " discovered " that they had won the jackpot. Some stories are better than others.. for instance!

So,you purchase your tickets " because the jackpot is Big " & then leave them on the table for a week. The other doozy that comes to mind is: Having the winning ticket used in a Christmas tree decoration...until it was check. I " wish" LP compiled a list of " Strange tales involving winning lottery tickets"- what a read, that would be...

Some people are demanding anonymity while others can't hardly wait for the next "how I discovered I won" story. Because of the size of their matrix, there are statistical probabilities both MM and PB will create huge jackpots and probably have just one winning ticket. \

"Strange tales involving winning lottery tickets"

I Agree! And it doesn't have to be just huge jackpot winning tickets. I had a $14 winning pick-4 ticket that somehow fell on the floor and my dog ate half of it. The good news was she didn't eat the half with the bar code.

I read on a news website that the guy who won this jackpot went back to work to the same job as a construction worker.  I do not think I would do that with $245 million big ones.-weshar75

All l can say Stack is " Wow"- you show up with just the barcode to your ticket & you collect?  I am going to go out on a limb, and say l doubt the Californian lottery will pay out for that. These guys out here are hardshelled. A couple of years ago, the lottery posted a picture of a guy purchasing a winning ticket, which was about to expire.

The " winner" was alerted when his face was posted on TV, so he shows up and they ask him" where is the ticket?" The guy says he tried looking for it, but to no avail. Their response" No ticket, no pay"- They agreed, yeah, that's you, but....sorry!

Read somewhere that winning the lottery is hard, keeping your mouth shut about it is harder, but all the best to you!

As a rookie lottery player, I thought, " WOW! Winning is so easy! I will share my cash with family." I had to go back and revoke all my promises. I had to eat crow.

I now keep my big mouth shut like Jackie Gleason would say, "My Big Mouth".  Ralph and Alice Kramden in the Honeymooners. I can watch those on YouTube.
