As its name implies, you're being taxed on your income. Did you mean something else when you asked What exactly are you being taxed on?

25% is only a down payment. A lot of winners make a charitable donations that are tax-deductible, those can be taken off the remaining taxes due. Without deductions tax bill would be a total of 34-36 percent of winnings right now, and Obama had plans to raise it to 40% - he has a dream to provide every voter and others with a guaranteed medical care. I am not a tax expert so this is the information I found on the forums. Would be very happy if I am wrong.

Hopefully that will change, but when I voted for the lottery I had powerball in mind. Does not really affect me too much since I won't be playing anything else.

You said 34%. I keep hearing people say No, it's not actually 25%, it's actually insert percentage here . In yet, every time they say that, they fail to say specifically what the additional taxes are on. As far as I know, federal tax is 25%. Could someone explain where this additional amount comes from? What exactly are you being taxed on

If you recalculate Fed tax of 34% (true, they initially only withdraw 25%, but you are required to repay the remainder by the end of this calendar year -- whether they instruct you so or not or BIG additional tax penalty -- so don't accidentially lock-up/non-liquidity designate the remaining tricky 9% due) AND State tax of 6%your net will be $63.6 Million Dollars. Be careful not to spend that $4.4 you mistakingly thought was yours to keep!

Powerball's annuity is spread over 30 years, Megamillions over 25, that's the main reason for the difference. MM requires more money in the cash option to push the annuity up.

I just saw that:

Mega Millions has rolled to 170mil with a cash option of 106mil

Powerball is 213mil with a cash option of 104mil

There is a $43 million dollar difference between the two jp but only an $2 million dollar difference in the cash option...

Can someone explain.....I am just curious as why there is a hugh difference in the jp but a small difference in the cash options...

All you need is a dollar and a dream. For instance, Someone might play for a $1,000 and another person play for $1, and the person who play for the dollar match all the numbers for the jackpot, and the other person win nada.

I know what you mean, would be nice for Arkansas people to play right now without going over the border.

Plus, when it comes to Arkansas, it looks like Powerball will be the only game available with a real lottery drawing. Sadly, Arkansas will begin life with an F on the State Lottery Report Card.

i picked up 80 powerball tickets and 10 ($2 FL Lotto) FL lotto tickets for total of $100.

i thought about making it all 100 powerball tickets, but given that FL Lotto Jackpot is almost $30 million for $2 ticket, i couldnt resist. plus, FL Lotto's odds are much better (1:22,000,000 v.s. 1:195,000,000

whats Best for the public is freedom of choice, and i think they have that already@

a lot of the state lotto, now have tryed raffle games

aka many million raffle ticket prizes, and so forth,

the public had their chance, at spreading the weath in jackpots by having a large set of winners compared to 1 or 2 so forth

you have to keep in mind that powerball odds incresed from 142 to 196 million for the jackpot...that is a big jump of 54 million more combinations...now the biggest jackpot was in august 2007 when someone in ohio won it (~360 million)....it could very well sometime or another be that it reaches close to $400 mill again....

i really dont care personally because 1 million is just fine for me...it just a publicity stunt with this game..they purposely design these games this way with high odds so... [ More ]

The multi-state Powerball lottery drawing happened last night once again without any jackpot winners, causing the new jackpot for Saturday's drawing to grow to an estimated $213 million, with a cash option of $104.7 million.
