That was huge amount of prize. How I wish I have won that ticket, I wil never let it unclaimed. I wonder if the winner even have an inkling about the prize that he was about to claim. A lot of players are actually waiting for a winning moment it is so sad that some players didn't know that they have won the prize. As players we need to be serious with our game.

If you lose your money, why should the state give it to lottery players? If you leave your loaf of bread at the store do you think they should hand out slices to everyone else who's buying bread, or does it make more sense to use the savings to lower the costs they pass on to all of their customers

There is a lesson in this story or should say there are many lessons in this lost jackpot.

First, the State won it now that the owner has not claimed it.

Second,maybe they were afraid the jackpot would put them in jeopardy.

Third, they failed to check the ticket and threw it out by mistake.

Finally, maybe they were elderly and expired.

And surely our members can think of other scenarios related to this frustrating event.

Years ago I found an expired ticket in the kitchen junk drawer that my wife bought before I met her,

I tossed it right into the fireplace (burning) some things you don't want to know.

I wonder did the winner have a heart attack, when he or she discovered theywon but didn't tell anyone about the ticket. I can't image how anyone could buy a ticket and not check it.

I think it's safe to say that the winner forgot he had a ticket, for got to check it, lost it, etc.. Or he or she may have passed away and no one knew he /she had a ticket! Oh well

Excellent point. If they are really serious about finding the winner, they should put it in their rules that:-

.....if a winner fails to show up until the last week

.....a wanted poster of the winner will be published nationwide{social media et all}

.....a reward of $10,000.00 or more will be awarded to the correct tipster{cops do it}

.....the reward money will come from the lotteries and not from the winner.

I would cash that winning ticket in so fast, it would make heads spin! People take time to organize their finances and so forth (a sensible choice), but I say cash in the ticket quickly and you have the rest of your life to figure out what to do with the money.

I think if the lottery was really corrupt enough to fake a winner, then more states would allow collection via trusts and LLCs.

Not only that, but you really think they would go to such lenghts in order to gain so little? There is $3,320,000 going back to the lottery, with the money being split among 44 states.

Most likely the ticket got lost. How many lottery players can say they've never lost a single ticket

There goes another RIPOFF from the lotteries as usual. The next thing you hear is blah, blah , blah, about education. I don't know who I'm more pi$$ed off at...the dumba$$ who bought the ticket, or the lotteries, who are always eager to use any excuse, to get their filthy hands on any money, that should go into the pot for the next jackpot draw. Well if you remember with multi state games each state will get their portion back. So that money will be divided between the states.

But funny enough, I think it was the $50+ million dollar jackpot that went unclaimed in 2003 that changed the rules for Florida. I think before that ticket expired the state saw all the dollar signs and changed their rules. The 180-day window passed late Thursday with no one coming forward to claim a $16.66 Powerball jackpot from a ticket bought in Hillsborough County, Florida.

The ticket was sold in May at Carrollwood Market, a convenience store at 4550 W. Village Drive.

The ticket was worth one third of a $50 million Powerball jackpot drawn May 25. The two other winning tickets were sold in Delaware and Louisiana. The winning numbers were 2, 6, 19, 21, and 27, with Powerball number 25.
