Given the lack of information in that article we're lucky we even know who pled guilty to what. Everyone is free to make assumptions, but the article doesn't even say that the mother told the son about the ticket or suggested any kind of plan to steal the ticket. The reasonable guess about why the mother only pled guilty to a robbery charge is that the prosecution didn't think they had a strong enough case to get a conviction for something that would have gotten her a longer sentence.... If that's the case then they'd be basically admitting that current lottery disclosure rules presents a security/safety risk. Something they've consistently denied.

Unless this woman called others to help, I'm not seeing where any heirs of the victim would be in any more danger than every other lottery winner. If there is, then perhaps it's time for them to revisit allowing for anonymity.

How does anyone plan the robbery and murder of an innocent person and gets to plead to only robbery and only gets 8 years. And why does this guy have a shot of ever stepping foot outside a prison cell again? With overcrowding and good behavior, it's doubtful he'll even do the 20 years. These sentences make no sense?

What I don't understand Is, It was the so called MOTHER that set the entire thing in Motion, So why Isn't she accused of Murder or some type of degree of It? That makes absolutely no sense at all, NOT THAT ANY OF THIS DOES. Under $600, Dollars REALLY??

None of the stores here will cash any over $500 but I'm pretty sure you're right about it that they could up to $599 if they would because they told me at the claims office you have to bring $600 over to them!

I hope they stay in prison for the rest of their life and sit there and think about what they have done over a few measly dollars!...how cruel they are!

I see now the mother got 8 years...that is not enough at all

A New York man and his 49-year-old mother have pleaded guilty in the slaying of a man who was killed over a winning scratch-off lottery ticket.

The Monroe County District Attorney's Office says 29-year-old James McCracken, of Rochester, pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree murder in the slaying of 66-year-old Robert Pinckney. McCracken's mother, Jacqueline Staples, pleaded guilty to a robbery charge.
