Anonymity only affects the publicity about the winner.

That's why I said IF the winner could claim anonymously, Tipton's buddies or his NY Lawyer would have got the check. I suppose there are many definitions of anonymous , but there is a huge difference in nobody will know the name and not publishing the name of the winner .

Is there anything about that that's hard to understand?

Not saying she's right or wrong. I would prefer to remain anonymous if I won. But.....it's not a stretch that someone (isis nut) from overseas buying a ticket and winning. Remember the guy from Iran (could be wrong on the country) who bought a lottery ticket (Oregon lottery?) through a butler service and won?

I tried searching but couldn't find it in the archives.

The States that allow a trust trustee - an Attorney to collect

1.Colorado

2. Connecticut

3.Massachusetts

4. Vermont

When winners demonstrate a high risk of harm in Illinois or Oregon they can remain anonymous.

Indiana allows an LLC The companies and not the name of the winner will be used.

Transparency is key to keeping the holder and the issuing state in check. I'll leave it to the clear conscious folks to understand the why it's important. Basically anonimity allows an isis member to claim or any I'll intent group to utilize this nice privacy laws to fund their cause...all because someone is worried about their welfare. Glad to see GA., at the least is attempting to fight, as i would too because i believe it should remain anonymous.

Only show, city, state flagrantly, and even county, First and Last initials of the person name is fine.I support anonymity when

you're winning big.

That is exactly what l have been saying. They, the lottery asks us to support them by playing. When and if we win, it should be the end of that relationship - show me the money get out of my life. I do not need the lottery to point thieves charlatans in my direction. Thanks, but no thanks. Having the lottery making decisions for me exsposing me against my will after a win, is not to be borne.

US State Lotteries should look at the UK Lottery's policy on anonymity.

The decision to share their news or remain anonymous is completely up to the winner and depends on a number of factors including who they've told and what they plan to do with their win. It's fantastic when winners share their news but everyone is different. Ultimately it is up to the individual and we'll support them whatever their decision.

Great list! We need a list of states that allow you to claim anonymously using a trust or llc, etc. and do not reveal your name.. Not simply automatic like with those 7 states.

Virginia does not define a claimant/person as a trust, etc..only defined as an individual. So they are a big no.

and it look like some of the other posters don't understand a state lottery not publishing the names of the winners doesn't grant the winners total anonymity.

Personally, l don't like that compromise. You are asked by the lottery powers that be, to play their games,and if you are of the correct age and willing to do so, you do. If you win, the terms should be reversed.

In one state, don't they release the names after a year? I think that would be a nice compromise. Just bump up the 1 year release for people winning 2-3 Million+ because they can afford to move and buy new property with a LLC to keep anonymous, and still stay out of the spotlight. For people less then that dollar amount, let them stay anonymous for 5 years.

Most serious lottery gamblers know in advance that if they buy a ticket and win a jackpot that their identity will eventually become known to those who want to know it.

There are lots of ways to minimize the negatives that come with winning.

Folks who will buy a lottery ticket only if their identity will be hidden for eternity need to step back and use their gambling money to buy movie tickets.

Personally, I want to know who won the jackpot.

Stone Mountain, Georgia is where Ira Curry lived when she purchased her winning MM ticket. She had to share with another winner who purchased his ticket in Jenny's gift shop in San Jose, CA. Yes sponsor could mean numerous things. The bill could have been written by someone else or by an interest group. Sen. Henson could just be leading the charge for the bill. Which means money was donated to him for his sponsorship.

Have to put an * by the State of Texas

As of 1 JAN 2018, the state of Texas allows you to claim anonymously at a $1 MILLION PRIZE and above with the cash option. The negative part is that if you claim and use the annuity option to collect, after 30 days they can release your name

Right on with that idea. My thinking is folks will spend the winnings even more so IMO if they know the Feds aren't there to take their lion's share of it. Here we have the largest tax code in any industrialized nation, that needs some serious trimming.

Am curious to transparency on the few states that do offer anonymity. Best of my knowledge never heard of any problems.

If it's the guy I'm thinking of he's a perfect example of why you should be careful who you hang out with, or who you tell about winning. The majority of winners who have been victimized have been their own worst enemies, and were victimized by people who already knew them and found out about the lottery winnings right from the horse's mouth.

This is nuts! People should have the right to remain anonymous, if they want. We don't go around telling people how much we earn, so why should lottery prize money be any different?

Here in Australia, winner hardly every choose publicity. The public accept that, because if they were in a similar position, they would also like to remain anonymous.

An open-government advocacy group has denounced a bipartisan proposal being considered by the Georgia Senate that would allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.
