I will never understand someone buying a lottery ticket who does not want the money. If she wanted to play for fun, choose a game or scratch off ticket with a lower prize. Too bad she had mental illness to deal with.

The brother's suggestion to cap prizes would not help...though I sometimes think capping the top prize at $100M might be a good idea. More money available for more drawings.

There should be a cooling off period before lotteries can identify jackpot winners. Some winners, in the excitement of a major win, agree to go public without really considering the long-term consequence.

He thinks the government should intervene and help people who psychologically can't handle suddenly being rich!? WTF is that!? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard! And lowering the jackpot will help that!??? If someone can't handle that much money, then they shouldn't be playing the lottery! Or get the government involved.

I have a co-worker who also feels lottery jackpots are too large. She believes that none should ever exceed one million dollars, but more important, that no one should have one million dollars. Most of you are already ahead of me - she's a liberal.

Miss Loughrey...... supported a school in Strabane for children ages 3 to 19 with special needs, as well as an organization that supports adults with intellectual disabilities. When you make a decision to help those who have nothing but a dream, you have lived a good life.

Here's the key sentence of the article; pressures of suddenly managing such a substantial amount of wealth.

It's not easy to manage substantial amounts of wealth. Everybody thinks it is, and everybody (including me) would love a shot at trying to do it. But if you've never managed millions, I can pretty much guarantee you that you cant do it well. People need to hire someone that has experience with handling very large sums of money. Ultimately she gave of herself.

Think this is the saddest story to me on LP. Mental illness is much worse than any of us will ever realize. Thankfully before disowning her family she did give them all a nice cash windfall. So many unanswered questions.

It's time the government look at the size of jackpots, Paul stated. They need to be capped. A person working in a factory or a call center like I was can't deal with money like that.

This lottery winner already had mental health issues due to her father's death years earlier. Winning such a large amount of money, only made her issues worse. The lottery winner's brother suggested putting a cap on how big a lottery should be able to grow, is NOT the answer. Even if the lottery cap was only one million dollars, it still would not stop the lottery winner from having problems managing it or having mental issues exacerbated by it.
