I see there was $500 under the '3,' Kinard recalled. It's a 50 times multiplier so by my calculations that's $25,000.

Find it odd the article doesn't show the entire ticket including the bar code. We can see the line in the middle of the ticket, but can't tell if it effected the bar code. The left hand margin under HOW TO WIN doesn't line up either. The W in winning is to the left of the M in match and so is the N in number.

Possibly why the 1 was far left of the 3 .... [ More ]

If the ticket is not printed perfectly, it's void, especially the bar code has to print perfectly.

Dummy me kept thinking it was a scratch ticket until just now!!

Our Fast Play in KY has the bar code for this and all machine printed paper tickets. When the roll is getting low here I believe a red streak appears, unlike NC, it is in the side only. All store produced tickets either vendor or clerk's machine put the bar code on the front only. Not possible to put it on the back.

The only thing on the back of the ticket is what's printed on it when it's made. This includes some information from the lottery, a place for your info if you win over $600 and a ticket number. But, there is no bar code.

Since the ticket printer at the retailer is only able to print on one side this wouldn't even be possible..

Here is a sample ticket from the NC Lottery website. The bar code is on the back of the ticket. The black line wouldn't have affected it. The guy was robbed.

I believe you are correct. I would guess that the 3 was probably standing alone. If there was another number besides the 3 we would be able to see part of that number. So you are right to focus on the bar code itself. The black line could have easily obstructed the bar code. The lottery official mentioned the bar code but he never mentioned whether or not the bar code itself had been breached. He also never mentioned the serial numbers located on each and every ticket whether they are scratch-of... [ More ]

I though the same thing, until I read the ticket. If

You look closely at the ticket, its got the winning numbers showing

and circled as 3. The photo doesn't show all of his numbers. So I

cannot say he did or didnt have it. They circled the winning

3 not his.

A somewhat similar thing happened to me last week when I printed a PB ticket for a customer. I had change the roll of lottery paper in the printer, but forgot to pull it out far enough so the tape that held the end of the roll would be out of the way when I printed a ticket. I had even printed a Cash 5 ticket for myself and it came out fine. Well, when I ran the customer's ticket the barcode was printed right where the tape was which had it's own barcode. OP Stack47 The black line that unfortunately runs down the side of the ticket obscures the first winning number and makes it appear as a '3,'

The story doesn't show the entire ticket; maybe part of the bar code was obscured too?

I was just thinking that too.

A bar code reader would not show it was a winning ticket if the BLACK LINE made the ticket reader interpret the bar code as one from a non-winning ticket.

the player can find out whether they won immediately after purchase by looking at the winning numbers printed on the ticket or just by scanning the barcode.

Some instant ticket players just scratch where the bar code is and scan the ticket. Not unusual to see several tickets unscratched tickets and Fastplay tickets on counters where the play slips are located near a kiosk.

I did the same thing with the magnifying glass and it stands alone.. It stands out very clearly that it is a 3 alone.. Give the man his MONEY!!!.. It's not like he won a Million Dollars.

Absolutely, I looked at it with a magnifying glass, and the 3 stands alone. I think he has a winning ticket, and their excuse is questionable because the black line disrupted the bar code and it isn't scanning as a winning ticket.

That's definitely a 3 by itself. Look at the other numbers and see how close they are to each other. There's too big of a space between the 3 and the smudge for another number to be there. He got gypped.

I agree it looks like a misprint 13. And if the lottery says it's not a 3 then 13 is the only other number it could be because they're printed in numerical order.

It's a big let down, but nobody's fault here.

A Florida trucker experienced the letdown of his life after his suspicion of a big win was proven wrong by the barcode on his lottery ticket.
