Blame the public. The United States is the only nation on earth that taxes lottery winners and lets Lotteries advertise a false amount of prize (loophole being lump sum cash vs amount) but people are sooo convinced they live in the greatest free country in the universe they can't even see when they are being screwed.

What's the alternative. No lottery. Everyone knows the lump sum is all that is in a jackpot. The lure is what the annuity would be is the jackpot you see. Taxes are taxes. No escaping the taxes. You just accept what you get and be happy about it. They are not about to all of a sudden announce, no more taxes on excessive lottery winnings.

It's a double whammy with US State-only lottos. They have low payout percentages, at least with Powerball and Mega Millions. Then they have high taxes on the winners. Account for all the money going in from the players and out to the State, and you see how unjust US lottos are.

That's what happens with all coerced monopolies, which is what all US State-only lottos are. You get ripped off with inferior coerced-monopoly products.

You raise some good points. I can't recall the last time they showed the actual winner. They just say somebody won and then we never hear anything more. Remember the drawing a couple years ago, where it was delayed for about 10 hours and then they released a statement that California won.
