I'm pretty sure that's how it works in some states, but not all of them. I've never understood why a retailer should get paid thousands of times as much for selling one ticket than any other ticket, but if they're going to do it at all I don't see why collecting the prize matters. The retailer sold the ticket and the lottery collected their share, so the retailer is being penalized because the player died, forgot, or lost the tick... [ More ]

Congrats to the winner. Even though New Jersey has some of the highest state taxes, at least they've passed a law guaranteeing anonymity. I think at the end of the day, I'd be ok handing over an extra 1%-2% playing in a state that doesn't force me to jump through hoops to conceal my identity. And who knows, maybe the winners tax payment will go into filling a couple potholes in New Jersey.

After a run of 30 drawings without a jackpot winner, the 31st drawing of the multi-state Mega Millions game produced a single $1.13 billion winner last night when one lottery ticket sold in New Jersey matched all five numbers plus the Mega Ball.

It was the 10th time a lottery jackpot had grown to more than $1 billion, and the ninth time a single ticket won $1
