l suspect that this New $5 ticket is a Diversion by Mega Millions to deal with a pending Mystery how two winning tickets was sold in the same store in California. I think they have a mystery and investigation and the Gane may have been Compromised. Actually Todd made a great point here. I also remember when Powerball raised the price to $2 per ticket back then. Also, they made the odds to win even more difficult. Is California still the only state that does the parimutuel on the smaller prizes? Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't that mean that in California, if one person in that state matches the 5 white balls but misses the mega ball, he/she would win all of that set amount money generated from California MM tickets. If more than one person there matches the 5 white balls but misses the mega ball, that set aside money would be evenly split amonges the second tier winners.

Yes. Increased odds.. not by a lot, but increased. (But I did say that you would be slightly better off.)

As for the lowest level prize.. It is a minimum of $10 (because of the compulsory multiplier), and an expected average payout of $15. max payout $50 (Expected average multiplier value is 3x... just like the current multiplier). for a $5 ticket.

So, if you win a prize, you are have at least doubled your investment .

That happens on every change in the matrix of white balls or bonus balls.

That is enough to ignore it for a few hundred draws until it has some data built up.

For $1 less I can play a powerball ticket with a multiplier and a second draw chance at $10,000,000.

I will probably try one last idea on the MM before april, but with the new matrix, I am out regardless of the jackpot. Same would hold true for PB, to be honest.

I have found that players do not chase when it comes to the lottery. They don't get frustrated when they lose because they expect to lose. They do not double up the next week with their play. That's not how MM works.

There are infinite tickets (lines) available for every draw.

If they sold 258m tickets .. chances are very good that they won't cover 258m/290m (88.97%) of the available number combinations (There are often lots and lots of people buying the same combinations. Case in point, it was reported (years ago) that in the NZ lottery, some 3 thousand tickets are sold with the numbers 1,2,3,4,5, 6 in any given draw

The interest rates were so low that the annuity was 83% of the cash value compared with the current ~50% (And was pre COVID as good as somewhere in the 40%-50% range.)

Pre-pandemic the starting pot was at 40 million, a decrease took place lowering the starting pot amount to 20 million due to low sales and the cost was $2 with the option to multiply for a $1 more. It wasn't suppose to remain at 20 million. Now the pot will start at 50 million with a cost of $5, that's a drastic increase I think.

I may be in the minority, but I'm fine with the changes. Mega millions w/megaplier is already $3. What's another two dollars? Except it will put my buy-in price at $10 vs $6. The second tier at a minimum 2M is attractive.

I hope they keep a second draw for the multiplier 2x, 3, 4, 5, or 10x. I don't like an individual multiplier on each ticket like Florida Lotto does. It doesn't seem fair to all players. Each winner should get the same amount.

Lottery providers usually only make major changes when they think that they need to revive interest in their product..

Note that a selling point is bigger jackpots and larger payouts at lower levels. Currently the cash value is about 50% of the jackpot value.

During peak COVID, the cash value exceeded 83%.

remember, the jackpot is the value of annuity that the cash value could buy.. And it couldn't buy much (Treasury bonds were under 2% IIRC.)

having a start jackpot twice what the cash value could buy is (sort of) asking for trouble (more money going out in prizes than is coming in as revenue)

They increased the cost of both MM and PB to $2 per line and changed the starting jackpot from $20M to $40M...

The pandemic happens and they reduced the starting jackpot down to $20M BUT NEVER reduced the price of the ticket.

Now they are offering an opening jackpot of $50M at $5 per line......

Good question, but unfortunately it's really difficult to get anyone at the lottery to open up about it. My guess (based on no concrete information) is that they will use the same $5 ticket price, with no multiplier, and the prizes will just be bigger than today. Check out the presentation slide at the end of the story it contains an average prize column that might end up being close to what the average California prize will be for each level. Again, just a guess.

I believe that everyday, there are people that quit playing the lottery, for whatever reasons.

I also believe that everyday, there are people that start playing the lottery. Maybe they were underage and now they are of age.

Wow so I buy 5 lines for $10 when the jackpot reaches around $300m. Now those same 5 lines will be $25 so a 150% increase in cost....

This likely means like me less lines for each spend. I would get two for $10. Each line has the same odds but less lines will be locked up per draw so we are looking at perhaps only two wins for a massive $3+billion jackpot a year.

The changes are very enticing.

I have always added the Megaplier and for me the addition will be from $3 to $5. A $2 increase as opposed to a $3 increase.

I don't know if that makes it feel better but I love the 10X win - 10M sounds good.

The 10M makes it match close to the PB Double Play which is available for $4 in some states.

The solution is to just play Power Ball and double your play with that game instead and ignore this ridiculous price increase for MM. How can you not be satiated winning even 10 million dollars in any game. No one wants billion dollar jackpots. Some may think they do but it would be nothing but problems. What can you buy. How many people do you want to dole it out to. Oh, you say I will invest it all and be rich, rich and even more rich. Then when I turn 79 I will cash out and start spending it.... [ More ]

In Canada, Lotto Max is the big game with jackpots up to $80,000,000 where it is presently capped. I live on the US/Canada border so buy them when they max out.

One ticket buys three lines of numbers for $5.00

It would make more sense to have MM at $10.00 for three lines, maybe.

At $5.00 per line, I won't be buying Megamillions any more unless it reaches $2 billion and then just maybe. In the meantime I'm sticking with Powerball.

Boycott Mega Millions. Kill their profits.

If you have an itch to spend $5 on a lotto ticket, buy a scratcher instead. $5 scratchers have much better odds of winning.

If the dollar hyperinflates, don't be stupid and hold dollars during the inflation. Switch to bitcoin for electronic transactions and silver coins for physical transactions

Same here, I haven't played MM in months. Played PB just a couple times in the last 3 months.

But, I won't be surprised to see people jump in when jackpots hit the billion dollar mark. (I won't be one of them).

At any rate they should take away the 70 ball also for more second prizes.

I won't be playing unless I'm in an anonymous state and the jackpot is super high. I'm plugging away on different games right now as I have already all but quit Mega because nobody wins.

Speaking of changing games Michigan has 3 dead draw games including our 6/xx game which hasn't been changed in coming on 20 years.... I'll post a thread on that on another forum...... [ More ]

Guess in April I'll be switching to only playing powerball because I'll never be able to afford 10 dollars a week for mega millions. But that'll mean I can afford powerball with it's multiplier. As it is I pay 10 a week for a combo of both drawings and that is a struggle. Mega Millions you suck salty donkey balls.
