In closely related news, Iowa lottery players have lost more than $6 billion since 1985.

The average payout might be better than 50% if some (usually scratch games) pay more, but even if the average payout is 60% paying out $6 billion would mean players lost $4 billion. Not all of that would be profit, but operating costs shouldn't be all that high, and they'd also have collected some income tax on winnings and the salaries of everybody who works for the lottery.

Kind of lame that Iowa Lottery doesn't have its own decent draw game I mean Wyoming and Montana do. That means there's absolutely no reason to drive to Iowa to get tickets.
