I agree with you RJOH. California's payout is pari-mutuel. Since California hasn't had a 5+0 winner, it's like a mini progressive just like some slots at the casino. If one ticket in CA gets a 5+0 in this draw, it would be [depend on sales of others] 1.5 million.

I would have thought that if no one won it on the 5+0 level, then the money goes into the pool for all of the other prize levels. This isn't true

California payout the same as the other states, but differently. California prizes are pari-mutuel which means the money allowed for each prize level is divided among the winners after each drawing. Since California hasn't had a 5+0 winner for a while, the money for that prize level has accumulated and will be divided among the winners when they have one or more. If a single ticket wins at that level then one ticket will get it all. Other states payout a fixed amount which over time should... [ More ]

That's not a law. The law says that all payouts must be pari-mutuel, and what happens is, is when no one matches 5+0 (which hasn't been done in CA for a while), the prize pool rolls to the next drawing. Once someone wins, one could end up only getting $83,000 or something.

Am I crazy, or can resident of califoria get 5 times as much for a non first prize winning tick in the mega millions. Has anybody read the new post at the bottom of the mega millins home page. It seems some law in califoria makes them pay $1.200.000 for a ticket with five winning numbers and no megaball, while every other state pays $250,000. Some how this just dosent seem fair. Maybe I am reading it wrong so PLEASE somebody check it out and let me know.
