You don't have to bet just 25 cents on a box. Costs more in P4 to cover the equivilent of all straights in boxed form, but in P3 you can play a combo boxed for $1.50 and if it comes in in any of the perms, you win the $225.00 you would have won if yo uhad picked it straight....and you don't have to worry about which straight to pick.

My vote is for boxed because if I miss by just one number straight, I don't win. Therefore, luck is very important.

well always st bx ...even if my strongest feelings are on a number in a straight order like i will put 1 or 2 dollars sraight and then i will throw 50cents on it boxed just in case..and majority of the time it comes in boxed so yea ALWAYS cover all angles

I rarely play all three or four numbers (I like pairs personally), but when I do always play both. If I play box, i'm afraid of kicking myself if the straight combo comes up. And if I play straight, I'm afraid I'll get all 3 or 4, but in the wrong order. Ohio isn't just whistling Dixie when they call this option Back-Up , it really is a back-up.

i don't like the way new jersey pays on the pick 3 and pick 4.they should have a set payment like most states do.....

I don't play pick-3 or -4. In NY straights pay 50% but boxes only 48%.

A lot of times I will play straight/box and if I am almost sure about a number....which rarely happens. I will also play the number straight. And lets not forget about the combo, if I am really sure

I almost always play straight box. If I have a really good hunch (which has yet to work) I'll go another 50 centrs straight on the same number.

In Illinois on a pick 3 the payout for $1 straight box is $290 / $40, the payout for $1 box is $80.

I've always wondered why people would pass up a chance for the $290 to go for the $80 instread of the $40.

I played straight for a year. It's not bad but can get unreliable at times. I averaged 4 hits a month. For the past 2 months, I switched to playing box only and have been winning a lot more with more total winnings. By playing box, I average 4.5 wins a week and and roughly 18 wins a month. Not bad.

Well that all depends on what game you're talking about. For Pick 3, I play straight most of the time with box thrown in from time to time, depending on how many numbers I play. I would rather play different combos of the same number straight, than to play just box. For box only, there is not much return on investment ! For Pick 4, I play box most of the time. I play straight on some of the numbers, and cover the rest with box. 24 combos for the single is too many to cover, compared to 6... [ More ]

Str/Box is the way to go. How many times have you seen someone complaining on LP that they had the number, but played it the wrong way? Just look above at derek7's and Blackie's comments as an example. So, it is best to cover EVERYTHING

I used to play just str but I was always getting the right number but wrong order. Back then Mswiz suggested I play 50/50 so I have been doing that since. When I finally get this down right I may change to just straight. Still learning after a couple of years.
