I suppose if you're talking about getting PB, MM or other lottery tickets not sold where you live, it makes sense. Even when gas was much less, I didn't do it because driving to GA from South Florida would be around 375 miles each way and about 600 to AL. Last year I thought of driving to GA to buy MM tickets, but I realized that if I was going to blow the money, it makes more sense to just b... [ More ]

I back the proposition that higher gas prices will affect lottery sales. It would help online gambling sites that offer lottery tickets. If you only plan to buy one or two tickets, it is cheaper to pay an extra dollar per ticket to an online company than pay for the gas to drive a number of miles to purchase them.

Orangeman

I saw no slow-down last Fall when the Mega Millions and then Powerball hit records right after Katrina and the $3+ gas.

If konane is correct about China driving up gas prices, then the law of averages is failing. That suggests the only reason gas prices were cheap in the United States for so long was because of dependence on foreign oil, which was cheap because the third world countries' weak demand was played off against the United States' and other supernations' high demand. Since China and other former "backward" countries are developing, that's increasing the world price of oil.

Higher gas prices wouldn't affect my own buying of lottery tickets at all. As a retiree with little interest in traveling, I put less than 3000 miles per year on my vehicle these days. So I might complain about the prices, but it really doesn't affect the budget much. However, I voted yes, as I think the majority of working people would be affected, and I know most retirees, too, travel far more than I do.

For most players, the term

rational lottery player is an oxymoron.

DD

Did you just read my other post on the MM thread? I said that I had to cut down on lottery tickets because I am paying around $10 more a week for gas since it shot up 50 cents in only a couple of months.

So my answer is yes if you are on a budget and no if you've got lots of money to blow.
