your modem stoped responding..... if the signal was lost due to static on the line. At any point during your session then the modem disconnects. This is why i said to call the phone co and have them run a test. NO cost for this service no one will come to your house it takes approx 15 minutes.

I have SBC/DSL and it is costing me $17.00 for the 3.0 high speed and it is very, very good for me. (The initial price for regular DSL is $12.99 for a 1.5 speed).

I also have a AMD 2.0 Celeron Computer with a 512 ram and a 40 gig hard drive.

that my friend and I had put together and is working very good. You guys need to upgrade your computers and get with the dsl...... once you get this dsl, you all won't go back to dial up....... and for get Aol! to much garbage....

Hi Lotto Mike;

Well what I can see here (If you have dial up) you why don't you get DSL? And as for your modem it is in or should be inside your computer. What I think here is that your modem will need an update if you can give it it's update and or (Now this is my reccommendation) to get a US. Robotics Modem. Now this is the top of the line modem for dial up.

But I strongly think that you should get DSL.... It's faster and better.

it seem you have only two problem:

phone static and your computer have worm (connection message always appear even when you already sign off)

you may DIY to check your phone line. if you need to replace the cable you might replace with LAN CABLE CAT 5 or more.

how it work site may be good resource or any of DIY site

if you have worm then you must restore your registry or you may recover all system for laptop computer they had recovery disc

ok once more if your having static on your phone then that same static is going to the modem since both are connected to the same telephone pole. (Modems need a clear signal to function at the best speed)

One it dosen't cost a cent for you to have them check the line tell them you do not wish to have a repair man come to your home he she will check the lines condition right from wherever he or she is sitting. they will ask you to stay off the line for a few minutes while they check the lines... If you have AOL, definitely call AOL and see if it is a temporary AOL problem.

Also tell AOL that you are seriously considering switching to another service (cable, dsl, etc) and you will get transferred to a "Customer Retention Specialist" who will then probably offer you a chaper rate (for your same AOL service). Ask them what is the best they can do for you (price wise) because you do not consider your current AOL rate as competitive. Some areas of the country have DSL for as little as $25... [ More ]

i'm going to work on getting cable internet.however i won't be here at this residence much longer.my lease just ran out and i don't want to pay the phone company to come fix something on the phone or pay for them to hook my place up with high speed.when i get to wherever i am next the dial up is history.i've had enough......

Good luck on Cable. I use DSL myself. Have had absolutely no interruption of service. Even had service when I couldn't even dial out on the phone, no idea how that worked.

We use to have cable tv a few years ago, service was so bad, each month included an average of 5 days of prorated rebate for loss of service. well then you have all the tools you need to fix just about anything. spyware protection and viruses. you dont need any add on's. loading your pc with multiple spyware and virus protection can cause your pc to run slower because they are constantly running in the background.

As far as your phone line is concerned this is the first place to look. you can call the phone company and have them check the line. Also unplug anything in the house that plugs into the phone line and re insert them.... [ More ]

Hey I can relate to your problem! I have dial up (AOL 9.0) and I have had similar problems. This is what I did and it worked. On the main sign in page of AOL, go to "sign on options", then "add numbers" and see if there are any more that won't be long distance for you. If you already have them all listed, just click "Edit numbers" and change the dialing order so that it calls a different one first. I change mine up periodically. no i doubt it i had the same problems almost every summer. When school let out it seamed like every aol connection i had was overwhelmed all day but at night after 12pm things would work fine. i chalked the experiance up to, too many people trying to get online via a phone connection.

mike i had those problems your having most are simple fixes.

Sometimes it's can be the phone from the pole to the house. If it's old and the insulation in peeling frayed etc. It gets hot in the sun and can slow things down or cause problems.

Sometimes it's the server that connects you to aol. If that server is overloaded it automatically sends your request to the next available server but that server could be overwhelmed too. This is one of the main reasons i switched .

Mike did you try switching the access number you use to connect to aol. Sometime that numbers server gets overwhelmed because thousands of people are trying to get online at the same time.

when you open aol before you hit sign on click the lil box below where you sign on and add a new number to your list. see if that helps.

I got two different things. One was Norton Internet Security, the other was Norton System Works.

They had them on download, but downloading is a source of major blood-pressure issues here, so I ordered the CD.

It runs through all kinds of things in the middle of the night and tells you it found 14,675 errors that need fixing and do you want it to fix them. I've never tried saying, Nawww. I like it better having all that stuff wrong with it, but I assume it's possible someone el... [ More ]

I let my subscription to Norton Symantic expire in January so I wasn't getting the downloads updates.... didn't figure I needed them.

Got so the comp didn't know whether it was Abel or Mabel by the end of May, and one of the things acting up was the modem.

I ordered a new CD from Norton and installed it, no end to the entities possessing my comp, including something woodpeckering my modem.

Well, I have DSL Broadband with Verizon which still utilizes your existing phone line. Now, they give you filters to use on all the phone connections in your Adobe, hee hee, I just couldn't resist, and this appears to solve the static problems. I had static so bad before I installed the filters that I couldn't hardly understand anything anyone said. Still can't, but thats another issue, hee hee! My cable bill is 47 bucks for high-speed, and another 28 bucks for basic cable tv.

Maybe the regular phone systems in this country are just going south with everything else. I'm on something called QWest.... covers NM and AZ (at least). I don't know whether it's because the village I live in is the end of nowhere and the lines are old, (last place I lived was less remote and seemed to have similar problems), or whether it's just business as usual for QWest, but I will testify it was better for voice communications before the Bell Telephone Company got nuked.

I have a comcast high speed cable connection, yet it still came with a modem. I thought everyone needs a modem regardless of how fast your hook-up is.

It's a Motorolla modem. Maybe a cable modem is different than a regular dial-up modem...I don't know.

For the most part my ISP has been very good, but expensive for my dial up connection, almost $22, unlimited, but I can stay on for hours on end, no problems very often, just very very low doing things at LP and elsewhere on the Net, I crawl here, I fairly good with Win98SE nd my old PC, it's optimized to the max for speed for a very old PC, Win98SE and dial up connection, it is as fast as possible for such a set up, I might even be faster than some people who use newer operating systems and PCs,... it seem phone line quality is the problem or might be you have heavy rain/thunderstorm and somehow part of your modem broke (maybe bridge ic).

my friend had this problem long time ago and the problem was poor line quality. after fixed by phone tech the internet more steady and faster.

well, using xdsl is good one, cost similiar with modem but you get faster connection, here in id it say 386 kbps but in real connection it was 115 kbps.

GET RID OF THE MODEM! PERIOD!

The only sensible way to be online at any and all times is via broadband (cable). Your second best choice is a DSL service if cable is not available in your area.

Also, in my opinion, AOL is the worst service you can have. You need a real grown-up ISP (Internet Service Provider) whereas you don't get kicked offline every ten minutes because of inactivity. Broadband connections do not have such problems.

The dirty phone line they're describing might well be mine. I get blown off line about every 10 minutes, on average, because it's lousy phone service up where I live.

If I felt there was enough margin in my budget I'd definitely go with the other thing to get off the phone lines.

once you go cable you will never go back.

there is just to much going on, on the internet for a cable modem to handle. You can open pages in a split second. look at and view huge files in a matter of seconds. Watch movies etc.

see music videos etc. etc.

I am still using aol but i have comcast connection. So i'm paying for both services but man is it worth it. outstanding ability to view any webpage without having to wait for modem to get the job done.

The Modem is where you plug your telephone wire in at.

On desktops, they are relatively easy to remove and replace. In the event the modem is built into the motherboard, then you just need to purchase a new internal modem and install it into one of the available slots in the computer.

On Laptops, they are not so easy to replace as many have them built into the motherboard. In this case, you will need to buy a PCMCIA card for your laptop.

sound like thats an aol thing. are you on aol if so call the support center. A teck will walk you thru the steps to take. Sometimes aol's adapter needs to be cleaned.

you should concider a broadband connection modems are a thing of the past.
