I totally agree with your logic but ever since WWII the palace of pure thought in Washington has really never wanted us to fight to win.

Ike stopped Patton from running his mouth because he wanted to stop the Russians once and for all. Result Cold War.

Truman fired Doug Macarthur because he wanted to put an end to the Korean war once and for all. Result Having to deal with a crazy man and Atomic weapons again.

Kennedy, Johnson and Bob McNamara wanted soldiers to fight a limited war.

When I was 11 years old I was traveling back to Tampa, Fla from Missouri with my 2 older brothers, my mother, and a great uncle. You'd love to see kids who don't want to go to war squirm ? Says more about you than it does about them. I find no courage in making people squirm.

I have found that people who want a draft fall into three basic categories:

They have no kids in danger of being drafted, or,Their kids are already serving or want to serve, or, They were in the military, so they think everyone else should be.

The way the draft was conducted while Viet Nam was going on was called a lottery, people were called up when their birth date was drawn.

Excuse me silky but I was one of them in 'Nam, did not do drugs, was in the infantry, got hit and spent a year in the hospital. not because of anything I imagoined but because of some little chaps in black pj's and rubber sandals with AK47's and Chicom grenades and 122mm rocket launchers.

Our unit went over from Ft Campbell to join the Brigade that was already there......only 10% of us made it back.

As far as that's a fact, Jack , you obviously don't have any facts.

Here's one of those Rich ....Slacker's now ! Went through the entire war in a couple of back water battle areas.....and never even got to Japan!

Plus..... he spent the entire war in the Navy Reserve. He wasn't even regular Navy for goodness sake. Slackers .....

It's pretty much a dead issue now, according to the morning radio. Pelosi has issued a statement saying that any such legislative draft will never make it to the floor of Congress.

Obviously she sees what a large can of worms this would be.

That's usually the case but not always. After I joined I was still 17 and not old enough to go to Viet Nam yet, so was stationed at Ft Bragg in the 82nd Airborne until then.

We had a guy in our unit who had been in Viet Nam in the 173rd Airborne. He was from Maryland and his name was Agnew.

Do the math .

I do remember back in the 2004 elections that John Kerry warned us about a reinstatement of the draft (due to the war in Iraq) if we voted for Bush. However, I think Kerry would have pulled the plug on Iraq if he were President.

His legislation will never pass for the very reason of part of his rationale for introducing it.

He has said that if there is a draft it will Prevent wars from occuring like this one. Because, he said, those in power like the Congress, will have their sons and daughters being forced to go into the military, where now they get instead to go to high-priced fancy universities.

Interesting thread. (I'm a Viet Nam vet also, Airborne Infantry).

Something is terribly wrong when Regular Army,, Guards, and Reservists are doing multiple tours in a combat zone while most of the population does not serve at all.

As has been said in this thread, if the draft comes back, follow the Israeli (or Swiss, or former West German model) -

I have mixed emotions on this: I mean, I view the 'National GUARD' as just that - guys and gals that are HERE to protect us HERE, and not to go be policemen around the world - that's for the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force.

I view the 'Coast GUARD' the same way - folks HERE to protect our shores HERE.

I also have a huge ton of respect for how Israel does it - mandatory two years in their service - no matter what - no exceptions.

I see nothing wrong with the draft. It gives the youngins nowadays to see how life is in other countries. When they come back to the country they live in (USA) it's much more appreciated. Of course noone wants a draft when a war or conflict is going on they're scared they may have to go there. I had to go to Viet Nam, was I scared, dang right I was, am I mad at my country with all it's faults, no. Better war and conflicts over seas then here at home. I am not sure if this means horray for the National Guard or what. The National Guard are brave soles because they had to go off to this war with limited training.

Where I live is a huge military training area, I know several guys that are trainers and they say the National Guard was unequipped to handle what they were thrust into. They said it was not their fault but they were expected to do things that are difficult for the every day soldier.

I think Charlie Rangle, who is against the war, but trying to force 18 year olds to go to war, is a bit more of of a hypocrite.

Well, here we go!! Charlie Wrangle, Democrat from New York, will introduce legislation in the next few days to reinstate the draft. All you folks so excited about a change in politics, you ought to really like this one. Now we can have a half-as#$d military. Now young kids can be dragged in to serve who do not want to and that is what the results will be a do not want to military.
