Free virus scan made me think about a scam that is currently being perpetrated on us-

freecreditreport.com

It isn't free. They make you sign up to their little credit protection deal and debit your credit card accordingly. They got sued for it too, but keep on running the ad ( with the itty bitty disclaimer at the bottom).

It's close to impossible to get a clean uninstall on it if you give it the boot ... crumbs left all over the place.

Guesser only has half of the story, and I'd also suggest the AVG free. Grisoft has announced that version 7.1 is being discontinued as of January 15th. Version 7.5 is replacing v. 7.1, is still free, and can be found here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5

While they aren't anti-virus programs, ad-aware and zone alarm are useful on any pc and they're free. If you have kids using computers you almost certainly need ad-aware or similar spyware/adware removal softw... [ More ]

Hi, Charh! I use Ad-Aware also. As well as Spybot.

Can't help ya on the antivirus, Mike. I got Norton for my son's HP laptop per HP's suggestions and he said that Norton antivirus was @# $#@ #...not that good.

Try Consumer Reports/Consumer Digest. You'll get a rating and where to go for a free download. (If, they don't have a recent article...check the archives, I know there's one in the archives)

Adaware is not an AV, it's a PC scanning utility to look for bad stuff, and it's not as good as it used to be, and Grisoft AVG is only free for another 3 weeks or so, after that they start charging. (free for personal use is no longer).

Anymore, 'free' and 'best' don't go together, you might try Clam AV, but it's rather archaic.

Mike, best one out there in my opinion is AVG. It can be found at www.grisoft.com. It's free as long as it's for personal use. Updates come out daily for it. Best of luck.

I'm sure there are some free ones out there that are good but this one is recommended by Todd. He said that it made his computer run 200 % better.
