I new a guy who's dad won about 15 mil in the early 90s. After taxes, and too much fun in Atlantic City, he ended up with about 1/4 of what he should have. So stupid! Anyhow, the kid I knew is currently awaiting trial for an illegal gambling ring, and the dad invested in a few businesses, but nothing too exciting. What a waste

I was involved in a lottery pool. There was 10 of us and we would put up $25 each . Once we ran our numbers at our corner store. A friend waited patiently for our numbers to complete and she bought the next five quick picks. The winning ticket was the third ticket she purchased. I only saw her two times after her win, she moved out of the neighborhood!!!!..................................................Joy

I never promise clerks anything because I am not their friend, I'm a customer. I pay for my lottery tickets like the guys buying gas, cigarettes or beer. My personal business is none of their concern even when they cash in my winning tickets.

my husband met a man who won millions,don't know which lottery. he was a guy at works brother-in law. they all went fishing together.. my husband said he wanted them to buy him beer. he was a cheapskate...

the guy at work said he didn't give his family any money,not that he had to,or his wifes family.

i might give them a little(my family and my husbands) if i would ever win,but tell them that's all their getting ,so don't ask for more.

yes, I have. TWO powerball winners in ky. The first one, won a long time ago when I was in middle school. The couple's son, who was rather ugly, was constantly asking me to marry him. (Yeah, he was nuts. ) Their life changed dramatically. The kind of change that makes you feel all good inside. I loved it. I remember seeing him driving a candy apple red corvette through town with pride all over his face, when, before, he was lucky to have money to eat at school and I felt sorry for him.... [ More ]

I worked with two guys that split a $20 Million lotto ticket about 10 years ago and another that won $100,000 on the Buckeye 5. The lotto ticket was a QP but the Pick-5 winner used a system; he keyed 3 numbers with 10 other numbers on 5 tickets. The 3 numbers he chose were birthdates.

That's a bit sucky of her to tell you that then not follow through.

The clerk that sells me my winning PowerBall ticket is gonna get real lucky cuz I will give a big check and a gift basket full of gift cards and other goodies when I win the big one. I have a friend who hit for 50 K twice on 2 $10.00 scratchers in S.C. , he won on 2 tix he bought at the same time, for a total of 100K. Also a few yrs back at Myrtle Beach, SC, on a pier that had a band playing at the end of it, a guy from up north somewhere must have wanted some attention as he had them announce he had won so many millions from the lottery wanted to buy all the guys in the band everyone gathered in that area a round of drinks on him. I don't buy the 'more people more tickets more winners' line because there have been quite a few winners in sparsely populated states such as Wyoming, Idaho, Nebraska, Iowa, and just few winners from big cities such as Philadelphia.

I used to think that way - more jackpot winners from larger population areas, until I researched it.

I have. My best friend's Grandmother won something like $6 million a few years back in the New Jersey pick 6. She and her then deceased husband worked hard all their lives in a white collar profession. Since she was already in her 60s or 70s when she won, she didn't blow through the money. I think she spoiled her family a little bit and put the majority of it in the bank and lives off the interest. As far as I know she still has the money. When I was working for the Amarillo Globe News I met a guy who won 1/14th of 51 million here in Texas. When he realized he had won the lottery, he prayed to God that someone else would win, too, because he felt 51 million was too much money. When he realized there were 13 other winners, he told the Lord: I didn't mean that many!

I live in a town of about 25,000 people and according to the Ohio Lottery website the last time I checked, there were 15-20 lottery retailers in the area(some only sell scratch-offs). I alway remind people of that when they suggest I pool my money with theirs to improve my odds of winning a jackpot. I figure at least 1,000 tickets are sold in the area for each drawing and I've never heard of anyone winning big so combining $10 with their $10 when they can spare it is not improving my odds of w... RJOh, I agree with you that there aren't very many big winners, but I know of many people who won prizes of $5,000 and $10,000, even the Fant 5 for over $100,000. I put the word know in quotes since I really don't know them at all. However, I do know the clerks at Publix where the tickets were bought.

Maybe a lot of members here have dozens of friends, but I don't. So if I could write that I knew several big winners and tell you how it affected them, it wouldn't make much sense, unle... [ More ]

I find this interesting that there have been so few winners where you frequent. The mom and pop store I used to work in had 4/5 winners frequently for Pick 5/Pick 6 and then as soon as I quit someone won the SuperLotto Jackpot. There is another store here,Lichine's Deli and Liquor where there have been 3 Jackpot winners since 2000. It's a little out of the way but I always try to buy my tickets there.

My uncle Jim about 15 years ago won 5 of 6 on Oregon Megabucks for $3500. My brother in law worked with someone who bought a $5.4 million Megabucks winner in Willamina, Oregon. He was a mill worker until he won and he left the mill to live off the annual payments he received from the lottery.-weshar75

Most people have never met a lottery jackpot winner because there just aren't that many of them. One winner generates a hundred stories so it just seems like we're hearing about them all the time. Years ago when I matched 5/6 in the Ohio Super Lotto for $1500, the clerk who had worked in that store for over 5 years said I was the first person in her experience to win that much lottery money. Yes, 1, Playing Lo-Ball in a Ca Card Parlor. He seem to have his act togather. He took annual payments +$400,000. The only money he spent out of the first check was to pay-off his home. He and his wife were planning on working for 5 years and banking those checks, then retire. Guessing his age, I would say,early thirties.

The first winner I met was in the early 70s. A family had won the big jackpot which was $50,000. They moved out of the projects and bought a home in the burbs. I really don't know what happened later on regarding finances.

The second winner was a couple I knew through a friend won over a million dollars (also in MA) and kept their jobs. He was a factory worker to the best of my knowledge. They renovated their home and used some of the money to send their children to college. Again, this... [ More ]

Our neigbor in Germany won the Hessen lotto. He was the weatherman for the local TV station and kept on being the weatherman.

When I worked in Vegas we had a player who had won the jackpot in the California lottery.

She didn't say how much she had won, but her credit rating at the cage was, Give her whatever she asks for .

She told us she took a certain amount of it and came to Vegas to 'have fun rolling some dice and betting on the NBA for a week and get it out of my system.

You didn't mention whether you meant a millions and up lottery winner but I did meet one man who won CA. Fantasy Five at the store I buy my tickets from. He used to buy tickets like crazy,everytime I'd go there,he'd be standing at the machine with all his playslips. Kind of sad but come to find out that last year he died from heat exhaustion during our heatwave last summer. I have, but she didn't win millions, just about 100,000 or so. She works at the liquor store where I shop. She and her husband still work.

The wife of a limo driver I used to work for also won a few hundred thousand, but I think that they've got only one more installment left.

If so, did you talk to him/her? What are their lives like? I have watched television interviews of lottery winners and became curious about their lives for years. What are your thoughts on this? It would be interesting to hear about the effects of lottery fame from the perspectives of various lottery winners.
