To me, there are more ways to blow it as you get older, especially when it comes to family if you have kids/grandkids/whatever. You also have a lot more time to think about all the things you've always wanted to do. But I do think it primarily come down to the person and not their age so much.

I think anyone with crappy money management skills at any age would blow their winnings in a heart beat. Though, being younger may have a higher chance of blowing it all. I know if I won a large, life changing amount of money, I would want to make damn sure I never ran out of money and invest it wisely.

Heh, when it comes to certain relatives of mine, robbery or worse is almost certain. So I'd have to move fast. I just see how many big lottery winners end up spreading it around and in the end have the typical lotto winner/loser story. I can just see what would happen if it were I who won, if I were to share or whatever, they'd just end up screwing up their own lives and then wanting more to fix their problems. Real old people who hit in thier 65-80 yr; tend to be given over to sugguestio...in other words people tell them to buy this and to buy that ; when it comes to new cars I bet the chldren and grandsons and daughters asked for it ,just so they could drive it ,they could care less about the payments then after all the gifts they beg the old farts out

I would say it's much better to win after you are in a relationship with someone that actually loves you... that is huge. it does happen.... some of the ones where their marriage dissolve and such it would have happened regardless of a lottery win or was on it's way there before.....

For the last part of my twenties I was living in Las Vegas and thus hitting a jackpot would have probably been an absolute disaster.

I voted yes, but it is a qualified yes. Some people can handle their finances while they are still in high school. Some never learn to handle their finances without getting in trouble. BUT - some people also learn from experience, and will do a much better job of managing their money in their 50s, for example, than they did in their 20s. On one of the lottery shows they had the youngest Powerball Winner..... he was going to Uni bought a modest house and was forming a production company to make films which was is major at Uni. Kid has a good plan and is sticking to it. good for him.

Actually, I remember a few years ago, a young girl in her 20s won either the mega million or powerball. It wasn't a huge huge jackpot, but it was either 60 mil, or she went home with 60 mil (and when I say it's wasn't huge, it wasn't like 300 mil or anything). Anyway, I rember it catching my attention cause I was think wow, good for her, she's so young! But you never heard from her or about her again, which is probably a good thing.

I just can't see how someone, at any age, can blow $10 million unless he's a real idiot. I realize we often read about winners who were afflicted with the Jack Whittaker syndrome, but they have to be the exception. The only unexpected expenses one might have is an uninsured medical procedure, but the first thing one should do after collecting the check is to make sure he has lots of protection.

With jackpots in the $5 - $10 Million range, people in their 40s or 50s are much more vulnerable if they quit their jobs, overspend, and have no income in 5 or 6 years. Just finding a good paying job might be difficult and they can forget about finding a job that where they could still enjoy the same lifestyle.

while some older people might have reached the age of reasoning it doesn't mean they will have any more ability to handle money than they did when they were younger.

Money does strange things to people and having more of it in ones hand then they have ever had before can lead to all sorts of calamity.

I know an older couple that worked with me won the fanasty 5 here in georgia a couple of years ago they are in there 55 to 60 range .they bought cars and a lot of stuff they really did not need and now they are struggling the cars got repod and there home was almost fore closed .no matter how old we are if we don't put this cash to good use when and if we win you can find yourself BROKE AGAIN

I have a son who bought a house, 2003 vehicle all in 2002, without any help. He just manages his money well..

On the other hand, my daughter could spend the jackpot in one year.

I don't think so at all. I think in any case, young or old, it depends on the individual person, NOT how old they are. I can think of plenty of 40 something year olds that would be very foolish with money, while I can think of plenty of 20 something year olds who would probably make it double.

How old someone is when they win defintiely plays a factor when winning a jackpo - exceptions to every riule of course, a la Jack you know who.

Things you'd buy in your twenties, for example, you probably wouldn't even be interested in later on.
