It's worse when you know the words and you pronounce them incorrectly anyway. Epitome is one that gets me for some reason. I can't tell you how many times I've read something too quickly and say ep-i-tome (like home) instead of ep-i-to-me. There are a few others like that.

I didn't hear about the $90 million house, just the one in Port Royal that sold a few months ago for $40 million. That's really having way too much money IMHO. Honestly, you and I don't agree on this (which is okay) but I just want a little cottage and some privacy. When I lived on Sanibel and Captiva there were plenty of millionaires who lived in very small houses, wore jeans all the time and drove old cars. Very different attitude than Naples. Not everyone is ostentatious.

How about the guy who is building a 90 million dollar house in Naples. He sold his telecommunication company a while back. He had to buy 4 houses and break them down just for the room. The lot alone costs 25 million.

Then there's that woman who built a 60 million dollar house, with a chapel on top of it. The cabinets alone are 3 million.

Both of them must be just horribly unsatisfied with their hideous lives. I feel so sorry for those poor souls. Poor things.

You can list all of the happy and succesful people you want, but it only takes one person who has plenty of money and still isn't happy to prove that money can't buy happiness. Maybe we're all using the wrong words. Money can't make a miserable person happy unless that's the only reason he's miserable. Money can't buy a person true love, but maybe some people don't care about true love and just want to spend money traveling and meeting new people all the time. Obviously if health is an issue the point of money is moot, but even then one can get the best health care for comfort and other qualities of life.

I think the issue here is about relatively healthy people and happiness, not if you have one foot in the grave. And to compare a loser like britney spears is rediculous. Materialistic things never really being happiness, they only bring a desire for more material things.

Maslow's triangle.

We start with a desire for food, clothing, and shelter. Once we have that we want other things, compnaionship, a sense of being needed, etc....Having all that, we reach self actualization .

But then it starts all over, back to the bottom level of the triangle, but now we want better food, nicer clothing, and nicer shelter.

If materialistic things brings you happiness, such as mansions, cars, fancy items than yes it does.

If your form of happiness is having a loving wife, good friends, a nice stable family than no it doesnt.

Thanks for wishing me well, Pac. I am researcing on alternative methods to cancer treatment. My onco doc said there is no cure for stage 4, he said that our best hope is chemo, surgery, then more chemo- which hopefully will keep the cancer at bay until science finds cure.

You're very correct. All the money won't do anybody any good if they're health is compromised.

Life and all it's ironies is relative based on one's own perspectives. Ironically, most won't realize this until they are going through it themselves. Somehow, money is not that important anymore, unless like you say to not leave bills behind for loved ones to take care of.

I am in the minority here. I believe that money can't buy you hapiness. What makes me truly happy are things that no amount of money can buy: love, peace of mind, friendship...

I have stage 4 colon cancer- that's the reason I started playing the lottery, for a chance to pay off all debts before I leave this world. I am still happy even if I don't win. In the past 2 years I've seen many sad posts when people have lost loved ones or gone through a bad divorce, etc. I doubt if money would comfort those people. Read the news article about the man who has a fatal heart disease. Sure, the money can give him some creature comforts and provide for his wife if he dies, but when you are fighting for your life, wouldn't you give up everything just to have another year with your children or loved ones?

I agree. I think money can buy you happiness. It can help get rid of debt. It can help you go see loved ones who live all over the world that you never get to see. It can help buy you clothes, food and other necessities, it can buy you fun things like a car, ipod, etc. It can help pay your bills. Being able to get or do all those things would make me happy and you need money to do it. Money can make people happy.

I know people with money who are miserable. They are afraid they'll run out so they never spend it. I guess that's because there is a difference between being filthy rich and being moderately rich, especially in this economy. There are plenty of people who were comfortable with nice homes and money in the bank (or investments) and their taxes went up, their home insurance skyrocketed and then they lost their jobs. Depends on what makes you happy.

Warm Oatmeal Raisin cookies make me happy.

Seasoned Meatloaf with garlic mashed potatoes and seasoned green beans make me happy.
