Wow... I thought I was the only one who thought like this. It's nice to know I'm not the only one. I absolutely LOVE the 'what if' aspect of playing the lottery. Knowing there's not a snoball's chance in h*ll that I'll win.

All of the above for sure.

The most important not listed reason is for the false hope... I play one PB ticket per draw regardless of the Jackpot. I know that the odds are ridiculous but I play it anyway.

I'd have to say to be set for life. When I think about winning, I do get the sense of what next? I'd be totally clueless as to what to do while driving home from the lottery office. lol sounds stupid huh? Of course the money is important but mostly it's the thrill of accomplishing the nearly impossible .

I have had to do that many times in my life. No drug or booze can provide me the high that accompishing goals brings.

Most recently though, as a new member of LP, I would like to join the ranks of members who actually have won a jackpot.....and make any contributons I can to helping others here who have supported and encouraged me in my efforts.

I checked All the above but mostly for me it would be to never have to work again and to be financially secure. Hitting MegaMillions for even the starting $12 Million would be wonderful. As a co-worker once said, why are you not playing when the jackpot is low? Should you win even $12 million, that is $12 million more than you have now.

EDIT: Greed isn't always a bad thing, I think it can be a good thing, I'd rather be a little greedy than be free with my money just to give me a false sense of feeling better about myself or have others like me, I'm not going to be playing a role for someone else to try and impress them either. There are two aspects to winning the lottery, There's the high odds games Mega-Powerball with odds of 175 million to one which actually defines the word lottery, most players involved with a quick pick or two. Then there's the daily numbers game which is conducted by the state lottery dept. But in my opinion not a lottery because the odds are much lower. By excluding the smaller odds and payout games it becomes exactly what Coin Toss said A dollar and a dream no matter how many different reasons there is to play. I suppose the people that hardly ever play, do play for the same the same reason most people play; to have the chance of winning a multi-million dollar jackpot and the fact that people do win justifies playing.

My point with winning a few thousand in the much smaller odds games like pick-3 and pick-4 is actually knowing how it feels

Several of the above would probably be my most accurate reply, but that wasn't a choice. Since I'm already retired, I can't say that to never have to work again is a reason. I have no interest in diamonds or fancy cars or a home theater, etc., though I would make an uptick in my living style. But not enough to consider to buy expensive things a major factor.

I'm not sure I get your point. This wasn't about small jackpots (pick 3/4) vs. large jackpots (MM/PB). This was about why people play the large jackpot games. I wanted to see why others played the lottery and if their reasoning was like mines. So I guess if I were looking for a conclusion , I guess that would be it. That others DO play the lottery for the same reasons that I do.
