I for one don't believe in karma...hell I have always done the right thing regarding matters like this and I have never won anything of significance for my honesty. However, on one occasion, I asked my brother to buy me A CASL ticket with the maximum advance play (20) with numbers I provided him to play. Well the clerk (God bless her soul) printed out 8 tickets all with the same numbers I had requested my brother to play for me for 20 draws each. Doing the math, that would have cost me $160 buck... No question, if the clerk makes a mistake and I catch it then I'm going to correct it, that goes both ways, whether it is a mistake that does or doesn't benefit me.

Retail/public service stories.... I have my share as well, some that don't deal with dumb or dishonest customers but some rather disgusting ones.... Just recently there was an elderly woman from Staten Island, or Queens New York who as a regular player of the scratch offs, purchased her usual ten dollars worth revealed the serial number at the bottom and asked the clerk to scan the ticket ( she couldn't see the tiny numbers) He does and informs her she won a million dollars. Florida-- payouts are made after the tickets are scanned,the machine should be right,its always right when you are buying your ticket. For me ,I can t argue on purchase amount ,so I must have overlooked something on my winning. That not the case in when making change or other transactions, I would give the money back

As for me, informing the clerk is the only answer, but not everyone thinks the same, so whatever you may have answered you're entitled to your opinion.

I respect other peoples opinions regardless whether they confer with mine, or disagree with mine. I may not always agree with someone, but I will always respect their opinion...

This is a little bit different: The clerk was honest with me. I pulled out $100 bill (blurred vision) which I thought was a $20 bill. She said the amount of what I owed her out of $100. She could have given me back change for a $20 but she was honest enough to tell me it was $100

That may be true, but topics gets closed after a month. How are newer people suppose to discuss things or add their opinion if a post has been closed? Plus if you look, there are many, many topics that have been repeated. That's just the nature of the beast. This forum only discusses things of a lottery nature so topics are bound to come up more then once. I like to see newer people post topics. It gets them involved and makes them feel part of the community.

You know what's funny is that I work with the public too....and I get a bit irritated when I get a good flow going...you know Next Please and someone holds up my line!!! LOL....it kind of throws me off track...lol...and pisses off the customers behind them so then they come to me with attitude. If a clerk gave me too much money, I would return what wasn't mine...and hope I wouldn't get any 'tude from the clerk about it.

Believe it or not, clerks aren't always grateful for honesty. I've been to several stores where clerks gave me too much in change and when I handed the difference back, they acted irritated instead of grateful.

I guess they look at it like I'm pointing out a mistake that could get them in trouble. ::shrug... [ More ]

I totally understand your attitude. I often use the expression No good deed goes unpunished. I worked in retail for years and saw the worst of people too. I have a long, long, long list of stories too and here's one of them. (just thought of the show Naked City)

I have NEVER had someone OVER PAY or UNDERPAY a win. BUT when I buy the tickets is when I have issues. I TRY to do what you do MysteryMan424 BUT the stores keep firing hiring people and very few know how to run the machines. I often have to 'explain' why they have the wrong (too much or too little) total for the games I am playing AND I am using bet slips

When I lived in Michigan 4 years ago, Some guy wanted to redeem a bunch of tickets. One ticket's prize was $50. The machine spits out two confirmations, one for the player and one for the retailer. I mistakenely thought both tickets were for the retailer and I gave him extra $50. 10 Minutes after he left, I realized my mistake and called my boss. He garnished my wages and I quit. The guy used to be an extremely nice REGULAR customer and he never came back to the store again.

Well...I say trust the machine. If the machine says that the amount given back is correct...keep the money...but if the clerk is just not counting correctly then help her out. Remember that this may be that same clerk that keeps your money by mistake the next time your in there and are in too big of a rush to realize it.

There have been many times with scratch-offs that I missed a number and actually won more than I thought.

When they under charge me I always correct them...the one time

I treat my lottery play like a business, and I frequent the same places and I enjoy a good relationship with all the clerks. Any mistake that's made will be straightened out right away, because I intend to maintain a good business relationship. ( key to success) I believe.

Not a tough call for me. This happened to me a couple of days ago. I had won $35 dollars recently on Powerball and for some reason the clerk ended up giving me $80. lol. I have no idea why she was off by that much, but it was a mistake. I told her she over paid me and handed her the extra money back. She was so thankful that I was honest with her. Her job could have been at stake. I would never think of taking advantage of the situation.

Reading the ticket is sometimes confusing, but scanning into the lottery machine is supposed to print an accurate amount of what you won, correct?

So let's say you bought a ticket and it says (you think) that you won $10. You go take it to the clerk, and then they scan it in, and the clerk hands you $15.

I've gotten too much change from a cashier and I always give it back. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question. The couple who spent $175,000 when they only deposited $17,500 went to jail. If it's not yours, then it's stealing.
