Years ago when Ohio Super Lotto had jackpots reaching $60M, they decided to limit the amount one ticket could win to $20M and people stopped playing it. That was before MegaMillions so the game attracted a lot of players from out of state. That rule only lasted about six months but by that time surrounding states had added PowerBall and Ohioans were going out of state to play it. Finally Ohio had to add MegaMillions to get Ohioans to stay in state to play their lottery games.

PowerBall has a system that tries to spread the wealth when the jackpot reaches a new record level by adding money to the second prize. The problem is setting a new record gets harder each time after it occurs.

yeah i think that would be the problem with such a system. some places like canada do extra 6 ball draws when the pot gets big, still people play up the pot , and dont all wait untill the extra balls are drawn.

Would you play a game that was made extra hard to win to to get a large jackpot if you knew the odds of winning it would be better once the jackpot reached a certain amount? Not me, I would wait until the jackpot got large and the odds were better to play. Let the suckers contribute to the jackpot and I would have more to spend when the odds of winning were better.
