Stack has it exactly right. You can always buy your own annuity so that you can continue to collect annual (or quarterly) payments in an effort to control your spending. Unfortunately you can also borrow against the annuity or sell it outright to get cash now. You can do all sorts of things to protect yourself from others and from the economy, but lottery winners are almost always their own worst enemies.

Back when annuities where the only option, I read about people that borrowed on future payments so either way a fool and their money are soon parted . Annuities are usually safe investments with a lower rate and you could put a portion of the after tax cash winnings into the bond market and get a similar rate of return.

I doubt there are very many jackpot winners that can say they increased the amount or are even after 5 years of investing. Most probably outspend their investments in first fe... [ More ]

Buy two Tickets with the same Numbers on both Tickets: Select the Cash Option on one and Annuity on the other.

A side benefit: If someone else hits: You would get 2/3 of the Jackpot instead of 1/2.

Unfortunately you would have to choose either the cash option OR the annuity - MM and PB will not let you use both options.

Theres always storys about winners of large amount being broke a few years later. Say a jackpot is 80 million and the cash option is 40 million. Can a person take part of it as a annuity and part as cash? The more i read storys about people going broke and i tell myself i wouldnt be that dumb im sure most of these people have thought the same thing. If the lottery allows and i would ever get so lucky i think i might go this route.
