We would go back to the bad old days of Numbers Men, and the state would lose out on the revenue. If people think state lotteries are bad, and I don't believe that, illegal lotteries are far worse. Prohibition of alcohol did not work very well, except for the Mafia.

It would be a bad bad idea. That money the states are making now would end up leaving the country as many of us would look to other countries to fill our needs. It wouldn't be a good step morally either. I don't believe there is anything morally wrong with gambling, so long as your not spending your kids college tuition, the rent/mortgage money etc..

harry's candy store,franklin+loudon philly pa.(no longer exists, i mean the entire neighborhood)

many times we saw the cops come and close his store,haul him off to jail.maybe late w/ his payoff ?

he was always back the next day,maybe it was all a dog +pony show on payoff day,

and they were just giving him a ride to keep the $ safe,harry did'nt have a car,

and many times i seen him waiting for a bus carrying a big suitcase,i know it was full of cash. LOL

Exactamundo. It is practically impossible to wean the government off of a revenue source once they latch onto it and find somewhere to spend the money and then start projecting what they'll get from it next year and allocate and spend it this year because it's an emergency .

Then, if the revenue source is lost, they'll have to find some way to pay for it .

That's where we come in.

Once the door was opened to create extra revenue for states, there is no looking back. Those making the public outcry will be crying even louder when they find out they will be taxed at a higher rate to make up for the lost revenues. And just like during Prohibition when the profits went to organized crime, so would the gambling profits.

Unil this latest wave of gambling with the river boats and such, historically every time there was a gambling craze in the US it lasted about 20 years and then was outlawed all together, except for Nevada and horse race tracks.

Ticonderoga, San Francisco, Hot Sroings, Arkansas, and others were popular gambling places, icluding French Lick, Indiana, which was very popular with celbrities and gamblers.

I personally would be looking for the action. Obviously, as with the Prohibition era, there would be pools of unsavory sharks out there looking to take advantage of you, and separating you from your money.

Probably the best way to find one of these number clubs, would be word of mouth from local acquaintances. I do not consider myself to have a gambling addiction, I just really enjoy whole process and have fun with it. And of course I'd like to get filthy rich at it along the way.

Numbers , The Number , or Policy still exists today.

Outlawing lotteries would definitely increase it - a player is going to find the action, and the Outfit knows this all too well.

I grew up in Northern New Jersey (way later than the early 1900s!) and it was a very common sight to see kids go into a candy store, by a newspaper (they were 5 or 10 cents then), open it to the next to last page to see the last three dollar digits at the racetrack and either say, Yea! or Aw s*** .

If government went through with this act It would be one of the most idiotic laws passed since marijuana prohibition back in the 30's, especially from a tax and revenue point of view. That being said I feel there would quickly be an rapid influx of organized criminal groups running numbers rackets all over the states. Similar to the Chicago mafia in the early 1900's

Similar to the era of Prohibition, what if public outcry and government intervention outlawed the gambling industry, including all the state run lotteries.

Would you try to find another venue for your lottery fix? Perhaps look for, or even form your own numbers racket?
