41 states generated a lot more than $1 million, but they have to pay for the minimum jackpot first. Sales for the first $12 million drawing were a bit over $15 million, which means about $4.5 million in cash for the jackpot. That's only half of the $9 million cash that a winner would get for the $12 million drawing. I think it is because they have a lot of lottery players like cali, new york, texas and florida to name a few states with a lot of players. So they win their fair share of jackpots and I just hope oregon gets one every now and then so I have a chance to win one. But it is frustrating to see one state win like 3 to 5 jackpots a year when my state has only 3 powerball jackpots in the history of powerball. And who is to say that $12 million or $13 million is NOT life-changing? Mega Millions and Powerball do not need to compete now that they are under the same umbrella. Players who seek the thrill of higher jackpots that climb faster can play Powerball, and those who are content with lower but still life-changing multi-million dollar jackpots can play Mega Millions... and many people will play both.

Also I think it hasn't grown cause everybody or most anyways is buying the powerball tickets too....Also I don't think as many people buy tickets right after someone actually wins...One because its rare to have two jackpots back to back and two the jackpot is so low.....that's just my observation and opinion.....

I agree with all above that the momentum around the Mega Millions of late has become somewhat lackluster. I though am careful of my comments in this regard as I don't want to build a case for the MUSL to increase those ticket prices as well. I know its inevitable and maybe this was all a part of the strategy for both games from the beginning.

SHOW the players better than we can TELLL them.

Powerball can do that for $2 with a $40 Millions starting jackpot. Mega Millions jackpots are not keeping up with inflation. Mega Millions starting jackpots need to be $40M like Powerball or higher in order to bring a higher playership.

It's happened twice before, both within the last few months:

- July 31 to August 3, 2012 - $12M to $13M

- October 19 to October 23, 2012 - $12M to $13M

And the jackpot had jumped from $12 million to $14 million a handful of times, mostly within the last couple years. Before the last matrix change (June 24, 2005), the jackpot would frequently increase only $2 million from the minimum $10 million (May 17, 2002 to June 21, 2005) or $5 million.
