Who says anything about enforcing? You think half these ludicrous lawsuits filed are actually enforceable? But what it is is a nuisance to the person who has to defend themselves. Ronnie, I really hope you consult an attorney if you ever win a big JP. There is no basis for a legal claim here and the judge would dismiss the matter with prejudice. There is no basis in case law or equitable relief to support a claim nor was there any type of verbal contract. That is not how the judicial system works.

Good question. I think unless one needed a trust, etc. or had some other pending legal issues (a divorce, etc), I would generally only set up an hour consult meeting with one (for wins of $2 million or less) to see if I am missing anything and then just work from then on with the financial advisor (I want to minimize my taxes and maximize charitable donations...so I would have estimated taxes due, etc). Actually it was Mindy who brought attention to Mindy after hearing the Lottery spokesperson tell Gloria's story about someone giving her their place in line. There were almost one quarter of a billion tickets sold for that drawing and probably hundreds of other similar stories and many probably more interesting. The difference here is Gloria won the jackpot.

There is no guarantee that the person who let Gloria cut in line would win. Maybe Gloria doesn't play the lottery and the next person behind her who did play win the JP. Or, depending on how the Random Number generator works in Florida, Gloria may have not gotten the winning numbers.

After reading Mindy's story I'm not sure if she was standing in line or standing in the way. How could she be standing in line and not notice someone stepping in front of her? Gloria owes Mindy absolutely nothing. Someone pointed out earlier in the week that the RNG is changing QP numbers in nano seconds....its a non issue at this point.

Stepping in front of someone to buy a ticket is no guarantee that winning ticket would have ended up in Mindy s possession.

While most everyone agrees that Gloria did not take the winning numbers from Mindy, there is cause and effect here. The butterfly effect on a micro scale. But there is no obligation or liability, and Gloria should not feel obligated or pressured to give anything.

If it was me I would share the winnings because they had let me in front. However, first someone would have to let me infront of them to buy a ticket and I can honestly say that the probability of that ever happening to me will be never.
