I know people who have bank accounts of $200,000 up...way up.

They worked for the money made great achievments, or inherited money, etc. Some play because for the most part, if they lose money it is no problem. They are not depending on the money for their primary survival. Most like the winning feeling.

Some of them take the time to formulate their own systems. Others may go around looking for fruitful easy systems that will continue to win almost everyday.

Yes they can definately afford to.

But it seems having wealth is a competition for wealthy people (if they are really human people and not interdimensional abstract alien entities).

So perhaps the real reason rich people play the lottery is in order to acquire more wealth in order to make their wealthy neighbors jealous.

It's because they can :). Simply put, they would wager into any possibility that having extra money isn't a bad thing. It's also they do not want to be left out in the crowds; standing in line to get the tickets. It is one of the best thing in this country (USA), anyone over 18 can play the lottery...period. So you're poor, homeless, millionaire, billionaire and gazillionaire, you can buy any lottery games.

They probably enjoy the thrill of winning, like everybody else. And more money never hurt, as long as you don't invade another country and steal all of theirs under false pretenses. That tends to happen from time to time. We might be due.

A better answer to why poor people play is because it's their only hope of getting out of the trap, paycheck to paycheck existence (if they even get one), or simply a way of getting 'extra'.

Because they've always played. How many jackpot winners really quit?

Because they're bored.

Because some of them are degenerate gamblers.

Because among the rich money is a way of 'keeping score' and they will brag about a big loss more than a big win.

Because like all other gamblers, they have a psychological need to lose.

I don't think all of them are greedy - some I think cannot help it. It's a psychological thing, like being born in the Depression. You can have warehouses full of food, but it's never enough. My opinion is based on what I see at my job - people who should be retired, keep on working through 65-70, though some of them are millionaires because they have been at the job 35-40 years (since high school/college), yet won't retire. People who are rich would still enjoy the financial security a lotter win would entail. Sure, they're already rich, but most aren't millions upon millions upon millions rich.
