The title 1984 was simply a reversal of the last two digits of 1948.

In 1984 it was all over the news but then it was more like, You think maybe? than the realities of today.

I must admit that I have never read 1984. It is on my list of books to read.

But, back in the mid 80's I bought the soundtrack to it by VanHalen and still listen to it to this day.

Jump is one of my all time favorite songs.

I've been trying to reread certain books I read as a young man. Not long ago I read The Jungle again, made me think meat processing is much cleaner now, but not sure the meat is. I also read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, both were still good reads, made me read other Twain works I hadn't read before. There's a long list of books I still need to visit again, but there's one I won't...because I'm sure Catcher in the Rye still sucks.

Excellent post, Buy Low. Love the line about There was a whole tribe of men who made their living simply by selling systems, forecasts, and lucky amulets.

Some of that tribe are often mentioned and idolized here on LP.

Most interesting since the book was written in 1948, before any current legalized lottery.

oops meant to rate this as a 5 but made a mistake and gave it a 4. I need to reread that book. I think I would have a different take than as a 17 year old. I recall the main character doing his morning exercises in front of a big TV that could see him also. That always stayed with me.
