The Iowa Hot Lotto ticket had nothing to do with anonymity. Anonymity means the lottery doesn't announce the winner's name to the public. The ability for others to see that the winner is someone real.

Others get the chance to follow your story.

You don't have to bother telling your friends and family you won.

You get a lot of new friends and family.

All the reality TV shows would already know who you are.

As you can see, there really isn't any advantage to the winner. It benefits everyone else and that's it.

The only advantage is to the lottery officials and the game itself, not to the actual winner. The lottery gets to parade a poor sod with a hard luck story in front of the world as an example that anyone become a millionaire with an investment of only $1. I can't see any advantage congruent with publicizing a jackpot win.

And good arguments can be made for either side of this issue too.

But against my own personal preference for privacy, I'd have to go with the outing of winners.

And that's simply because I don't fully trust the present or future muckety-mucks enough to refrain from the temptation to capitalize on what seems to me to be an easy avenue for potential corruption.
