California has pari-mutuel prizes and this was the old game, see the date on the check! The 2nd place prize wasn't $1 million then

In California we don't have fixed prizes. It's pari-mutuel. Sometimes it works in our favor, sometimes it doesn't.

I came across this story and I am a little confused as to how he did not win 1 million dollars rather than $179,442. He matched 5 white balls on Mega Millions and missed the mega ball.
