The $27 million was after taxes (cash value before tax was $41.6 million). David Edwards actually split a $295 million jackpot 4-ways. I am somewhat surprised that the media didn't boast about him winning $295 million or even the true pre-tax portion of $73.75 million.

I feel sorry for him simply because he did try to do the right thing initially. All the big mistakes he made, he made after he got back on drugs and I doubt if he would have relapsed again had it not been for his wife. After she started using again he sent her to rehab a couple of times. When it was clear that she wasn't going to get her act together, he kicked her out. i know I shouldnt feel sorry for him either but it was such a trainwreck you knew it would not end well. He had a chance of a lifetime and squandered it all, that is the sad part, he could have done so much good for others, including his own daughter.

When I first saw the segment on Edwards, I remember thinking that his story will have a sad ending...but I also remember thinking I wouldn't feel sorry for him, either. He was given the ultimate second chance in life and blew it. That was David Lee Edwards from Kentucky. Such a sad story. He is the one whose financial advisor said had he spent a little to buy a house and car and invested the majority, he could have lived off the interest to the tune of $87,000 A MONTH AND NEVER TOUCHED THE PRINCIPAL. Who could not live off $87k a month? He ended up losing his Florida home due to non payment of HOA fees. Then all his cars went. I don't think she split it with her brother and father because she was being nice or generous, otherwise why hasn't she helped her sister. She split it with them because technically, it was their money she used (at least according to the sister).

I agree that the production company was a huge mistake, but then again I thought the tee pee motel was a crappy idea too, so I no longer have the right to judge too harshly (LOL).

Todd has referenced the $67 million pre-tax amount several times in different articles. The report of each netting around $21 million is false. The true net amount is closer to $14 million.

LOL. Not really. Whenever I catch an old episode of TLCML that I haven't seen in a while, I do a Google search on the winners or their businesses.

The guy didn't lose the bar because of a lawsuit, he and his partners had issues and he was sued by a third entity over a contract breach or something to that effect, so that dream he had didn't materialize. No idea what happened to the young fiancee he had and I can find no evidence that he went broke or bankrupt, just that the music bar did.

It appears the Tee Pee motel is still doing well, the initial cost was only 60k but they spent another 1.6 million renovating the property. Bryon Woods and his wife expanded the operation by recently adding an RV park as well.

I think his prize is paid as an annuity of roughly 2 million for 23 years before taxes.

Yes, I felt the same way about the tee pee motel. I saw that and thought it was a waste of money,but he's getting his money yearly so he won't be going broke anytime soon. This was my first time seeing the doorman episode and i found it very interesting. I'd never heard of a Tee Pee motel before and I had thought he was nuts. Go figure. But he needs to stop blaming the house reno on his wife's stroke. I think the oldest kids are in their 20's now and the other two are near to HS graduation age wise(based on what I googled). I hope she does not raid their education funds. Oh yeah, I heard about the sister. That she's destitute and never saw a dime of the money. The house hunt was fake , they had no intention of buying any of those houses.I remember someone who knows them saying that the producers ask them to film doing lavish things. I think it was also mention that they have financial advisors and are very careful about how much they spend.

Its not entertaining people talking about their real boring life, everyone wants to see the extravagant and reckless people. So the producers encourage them to play it up for the cameras.

I think the show focuses on what the winners want to focus on. I don't think TLCML does any kind of investigative reporting ahead of time. But I'm guessing that the winners who aren't quirky and/or flamboyant are given a backseat to those who are. David Lee Edwards was almost broke when the show featured him. He borrowed money to buy some of the things at the house he was showing off. Anytime a shows only purpose is to highlight wealth, people go to any length to outdo others.

That gay couple was one of my favorite stories. They were getting themselves into more debt than they had before they won the money. The multi-million dollar house hunt made no sense to me. None. Actually if I recall correctly, this was the second show with Cynthia Stafford, an update. The first show did focus on how having the money enabled her to get the brothers children. It took some time, I think she got the first youngest two and then told the courts she could afford and there is no reason for the others to remain in foster care, they all needed to be together. I agree! Rescuing her brother's children was a great story, but this show does seem to only want to focus on spending, spending, spending. I remember the one episode with the gay couple who won 5,000,000 dollars or around that, and they were looking at 4,000,000 dollar houses. That was insane, and I believe that was only done for the show. I do find stories about lottery winners interesting but this show does seem lay it on thick.

Maybe the show should have focussed on the fact that she rescued her deceased brother's children from foster care after her win, rather than on her conspicuous consumption.

I had the feeling that the spending was to impress the boyfriend, who's stated goal was to be half of the latest Hollywood power couple .

But if MTV Cribs and the Real Housewives franchises have taught me is that people can pretend to be rich on reality TV and can be convincing about it. I don't believe she was really going to buy a jet. At least not one in that price range. I figured out that if she wasn't bankrupt yet then she wasn't spending as much as she was pretending to spend.

According to a quick search, the trainer ended up getting married to her back in 2010. He played his card right and is now entitled to half of her assets unless she had him sign a pre-nup. He is also abour 14 years younger than her.

She won $112 million, took $60M after tax and split that 3 ways with family. But on her $20M she bought a mansion and is looking at a private jet ($5-$8M), a Rolls-Royce and a Bugatti Veyron. Not to mention shopping on Rodeo Drive.

A lot of the national animal charities do not have good reputations...better to give to your local no kill volunteer rescue org. who is going out and pulling cats and dogs off of death row at high kill shelters and taking give ups.

TLC runs these mini marathons quite often and even though I have seem them all a couple of times, no new shows have been filmed in years but I enjoy watching them. It reminds me that anybody can win and it sure is nice to dream.

I don't think there is any argument that anyone here on LP would really want to be a real millionaire.

Fantasizing about it may be nice but living the real lifestyle would be the ultimate goal.

I almost fell out of my chair when they said how much she got. The last two big Sweepstakes P.C.H, they did not award the prizes. I believe the first one was $1,000.00 a day for life, and the 2nd was 10,000,000 plus 250,000 a year for life. I could be wrong but I think those are the figures. P.C.H should be ashamed of themselves for this nonsense. I believe they never have intention of awarding the big prizes but have no problem giving out the secondary ones. I gave them a try for both of these

I was thinking she should net about $650k and was shocked when it said she got $250k. I dont know much about PCH but they have all these contests that are numbered and dated who can keep track of them all and who is awarded the win? For the PB and MM, taking the annunity for me at least would be dependent on age, I would take the cash. PCH ..... I would be afraid they would be out of business, sanctioned or ? Before I could collect the whole amount lol.

It's called the We're going to get hit with multi-state fines and restitution fees. They need to set aside funds to pay those pesky fines.

Exactly me and my brother-in-law said the same thing. I mean that's 3/4 of her winnings...taxes were probably only in the neighborhood of 280k to 320k so the fees ate her up worse than taxes did. I think they do that because you dont want it spread over 20 years. Cause I heard if you win that 10 million dollar prize that you only get like 2 million if you take it all at once.

Isn't that nuts? Publisher clearing house what a crock. They said after FEES and taxes....so what fees does PCH charge? $250k is still a lot of money but not when it is a net of a million, almost not worth all the hype and excitement of winning.
