Good for you! I worked loss prevention at a department store years ago, and it wasn't uncommon for cashiers to get fired if they came up short on their tills. Management assumed they must be stealing, and promptly gave them the heave ho. I'd hate to cost somebody their job by dishonestly keeping excess change.

That happened to me as well. The cashier mistakenly handed me $20.00 more than what she was supposed to and I was already in my car when I noticed and I went back in and told her she gave me way too much change. She was extremely grateful because I'm sure some people would have kept it, but if you have ever worked a job like that going 20 dollars short is a big deal.

That was poor customer service at your Publix. I had a $20 get stuck in the machine at my Publix in Ocoee and the manager came right out, opened the machine and found the $20 stuck in between the feeder and cash bin. He pulled out a crisp $20 and gave it to me.

I've had troubles with the vending machines, too. I sometimes buy a lottery ticket or scratchers from a machine in a grocery store when I'm there; it was located right by the bathrooms near the exit. One time I had put in $20 bucks and got my lottery tickets, intending to spend the rest on scratch tickets. I chose one and let it dispense, then was checking the display to see the balance and I heard a whirring and watched the amount decrease...and again and again. I looked down to see a kid about... [ More ]

Do you think I would

just leave it there for the next guy or tell the clerks at the desk...nooooo, I used it. Is THAT stealing when no one

is around? Oh and by the way, all I won was $20 back on that 'found' money.
