I thought it was illegal too even though a gas station let me use the debit card to pay for lottery tickets when paying for gas. And I thought the clerk was doing me a favor. It doesn't matter if it is legal if the store won't let you pay with it.

Some of the biggest legal sports betting used to be at , believe it or not, Little Caesar's. Don't even know if it's still there, but if I remember right they're the ones who booked Stupak's $1M bet on the Super Bowl when Cincinnati lost but covered the spread.

Even though I saw the transaction, I still don't believe it's legal to buy lottery tickets using an EBT card. I never saw the law where buying lottery tickets with a debit or credit card is illegal, but a small store owner told me he didn't because of his cost. Many smaller stores have minimum limits for using debit cards.

Discussions like these need to distinguish between legalized gambling and illegal gambling.

For one thing, all the money bet legally on the Super Bowl is mere chump change compared to the amount bet illegally.

In the 1980s, the biggest action in Vegas was players from Japan asking for private games in their suites with hand picked dealers and supervisors and action way, way over the casino's limits.

In Tx it's illegal to use a debit card (don't know about EBT but probably not legal). The local Tom Thumb grocery store where I buy my tics did let me use my debit card once because I didn't have enough cash. The girl at the service desk had run the tics, and I realized I was short, so I said I'll run across the lot to the bank atm, but she said she knew me, being a regular customer, and told me to just use my card. I was surprised but happy it saved me time.

From what I've learned, it depends on the store or operation because some will take debit cards as payment for lottery tickets and apparently the store I was in, considers an EBT card is the same as any debit card. The store is a smaller version of a grocery store with only three check-out lines with the scratch-offs and lottery terminal behind the first one. If it is illegal, the store is breaking the law in plain sight, which I doubt because they would lose their business.

I always said when Ohio finally got into the casino gambling game, the market would be saturated and is certainly smaller than if they had followed Indiana, Michigan, West Virginia, and Pa years ago. The good news is they will still get some of the Kentucky traffic.

Another factor is the recession and only time will tell how long the effect will last.

Stack, are you sure about the use of a EBT card? Was the clerk, Black or White? Before anyone jumps up and screams , Racist , think about this. Once, I stopped at a quik stop to turn my tickets in, but I had to use the ATM. The ATM wasn't working and the clerk, (one of the Patel brothers) told me I could use a credit card, which is a no-no in Florida. All the receipt had on it was gas and the amount. The more poor people we have the greater the risk of those same people taking up Gambling, what a novel idea you have going for you there Thrift.

One of the scariest statistics in recent employment reports is the ever-rising number of people who have dropped out of the labor force. Americans can now gamble using their phones, but there are now less places to gamble online than there were in 2006 because of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Internet banking is nothing new and ATMs were probably a very large factor in casino resort area growth. Net banks were created so people could transfer and deposit funds to gamble with. I personally knew several people who could play online Bingo 24/7 for a nickel a card before 2006.

True, but it's mine and many others' views that believe the computer industry has experienced an exponential growth of information from it's inception till present, and growing ever more, allowing for radical changes to blossom faster than normal. Things can get out of hand very quickly.

If gambling was something new, I'd be more inclined to agree with you, but today's gambling is just a restructuring of older forms of gambling. Jack Dempsey bet his entire purse of $27,000 he would knock out Jess Willard in the first round in their 1919 title fight. That year betting on baseball was so common several ball players were banned for fixing games including 8 members of the Chicago White Sox who fixed World Series games.

I agree somewhat. False dreams being sold to the masses is so sad. People by the millions who spend anywhere from 20 to 100 a week or more actually believing they will win a major JP one day.

Can you imagine the billions saved a year if people stop fooling themselves. Hundreds of thousands or even more living their daily lives wringing their hands while waiting for the next PB drawing.
