For those keeping up with the MMC shenanigans, I found a couple of recent articles that talk about the show setup etc. So far there have been 2 millionaire winners.

Tell me about it! I haven't heard of +EV scenario like this since the Massachusetts Cash WinFall ordeal. Wish I was closer to PA; I would've dropped a couple thousand or rounded up some investors to put the Law of Large Numbers to test. All in hindsight though, since I didn't believe they would actually pay an excess.

Wish I'd won. I played a couple of MMC tickets nearly every drawing and never won. MMC was just plain unlucky for me - maybe I'll win a trip to Vegas; have 49 entries. Anyways, those who did hit last night got a nice holiday gift. The payouts were well above what I'd estimated. I was figuring somewhere in the 5x - 10x range, not 20x. Maybe PA Lottery will make it up to me later today in the Daily Number or Big-4 - it's the least they can do

WOW ... PA just had their own little El Gordo in December !

I agree I wasn't expecting those kind of payouts ... I would have easily bought ten more tickets for $50 ... just getting two numbers on one ticket would still show a profit. I was like everybody else, maybe only expecting a few extra dollars ... just didn't have any idea the payments would be increased that much.

Apparently Pennsylvania wasn't bluffing and DID pay out an excess tonight, which is really interesting. $97.50 just for matching 2 of 5! The post facto expected value for a player in this draw was more than $3 per dollar spent, or roughly $15-16 for a $5 ticket. Even I didn't expect this.

I went back and dug up the research conducted by SGI earlier this year. Don't remember if this is the research I thought was suspicious or if it was another document, but needless to say, there are some red flags. For instance, they compared the mean interest rating of the game before and after the inclusion of Monopoly branding. I didn't take what you said as a knock on Texas Lottery.

We've all heard for years, including some LP members that players want more people winning a million dollars instead of one big winner. Where are those people when it came time to step up and vote with their money? Answer....talk is cheap.

I see it everyday in my store. Customer says he wants this or that, does the exact opposite.

The Texas Lottery suspended MMC sales after December 12 and that's when the other states decided to suspend sales after tonight's drawing. I didn't say it as a knock on the Texas Lottery, but wondering after the All or Nothing confusion, why they didn't pay more attention to the MMC game rules.

In AoN, Texas forgot that players like to bet certain ways, ie; all even, all odd, 1st 12, last 12.

In Monopoly, Texas and the other states believed the big sales projections GTech promised.

Northstar, GTech, and others always promise the moon, but they never can really guarantee big sales. The states always believe them for some reason.

It was different when Texas called for a do-over on their All or Nothing game because it only affected that lottery, but this time it affected lots of other lotteries. It looks like somebody decided to evaluate all the possible outcomes AFTER the games began. With the MMC game, it's not as simple as stopping sales to close a loop hole and than continuing the same game because the loop hole here is the possibility of an unexpected jackpot winner.

If all excess must be returned, then PA Lottery will have to sell about 20 times the number of MMC tickets as last week. Could happen, but highly unlikely. Even if they do, presumably, any excess would be so small to not even matter - say a $5 payout might be $6. Not worth getting excited about, let alone playing anything extra.

About the only way I see there being extra money, as LottoMetro speculates, is if the previous top prize hit / club winners share was already paid for, which presumably is the case.

Doing a quick back of the envelope estimate, I'd say PA Lottery has about $1 million set aside for the top prize ... seems a lot, but that's over the course of 6 drawings, which goes to show how little revenue the game takes in. PA Lottery putting a $million towards roll-downs, for player goodwill, is nothing comp... [ More ]

If they just rode it out with the original format they probably would operate within the liability limits just be letting probability work over the long haul. The risk is that improbable things can happen and if there's a jackpot winner the guaranteed prizes cost at least $18 million. That's a fair amount of money when it's 4 weeks of gross sales, and it seems they're unwilling to take that risk.

Will be interesting to see how much those prizes increase, if they even do. Like I said, there is no money, which makes me wonder if they're just posting this to appease players. PA has only contributed around $1.5 million to the Top Prize since the beginning of the game. They're in the hole like everyone else.

If they bring the game back, as long as it has the Monopoly theme, they will award Monopoly hats to MMC winners. It's part of the contract I've been mentioning.

And again, there are no hats. Each lottery is given 3 samples for sizing purposes only and they're not allowed to give them away. Once they learn the winner's head size, then the hats are produced and shipped directly to each winner. So it's not like the lottery has a stockpile, like they do with their branded t-shirts and mugs.

Interesting about PA.

They happen to be the lottery that proposed all the remaining money be returned to the respective states. I don't know how MUSL voting procedures work, whether proposals have to be unanimous or not, but only 13 of the 21 members that attended the recent conference voted in favor of PA's idea.

I am still not sure what they mean by remaining money, since there is a deficit. I have a feeling they mean the proportion of sales that each lottery contributes to the jackpot(s... [ More ]

According to NY Lottery Sweet Million info page, only 40% is allocated towards prizes. That's really bad considering most numbers games are around 50%, which itself is lousy. NY Lotto isn't much better, since it's also 40%, but has one saving grace in that the prizes aren't fixed, and jackpot can roll-over, which can improve the value proposition for some players, such as those who wait until the jackpot is $10 million+ to play.

And can you imagine the rollovers? Would likely increase at the same rate but since they would be starting at one it could take 5 or more draws just to get to 10 prizes. Not to mention it would take longer to reach the jackpot cap. Players already complaining how it increases too slow. This is a disaster just waiting. I have no idea who feeds these guys their ideas. Well given their vendor contract, I suspect they are largely stuck with the current format.

The only benefit of nobody being aware of the game is that the TV show might be the first many people hear about it. Therefore, they may get an initial boost of sales when it re-launches. But I expect the sales will drop again when the novelty wears off and people realize how bad the odds really are for the prizes.

In any event, keep us posted since we cannot rely on the state lotteries or the MMC

Yup, when I heard the proposed changes my jaw literally dropped and I said, Is that the best they could come up with?

They're supposed to get the results from new market research in early January, so I hope that it turns out to be a wake-up call.

Part of the problem is their vendor contract requires them to adhere to the original matrix, pricing etc. In order to get around this they would have to overhaul the whole agreement which would take months. Plus, good luck getting everyone to agr... [ More ]

Just when I thought the MMC game couldn't become even more of a ripoff. On a related note, many of the MMC participating lotteries have posted notices saying the MMC game is ending with no mention of it returning. It will be confusing to some, if it comes back, especially so soon. And for sure, many will avoid MMC - why play a failed, retread game that has even worse payouts than the previous incarnation.

Thank you again for the update. One question, what do you mean when you say that they want to carry over remainder from this Friday's drawing. Does that mean the number of millionaires will stay at 22 when re-released in January or does it reset to 1. Also, it looks like the Las Vegas drawing scheduled for 1/6/15 is still on. My guess is, they aren't going to pull the plug easily. They are patiently waiting for the other states to join, as well as the TV game show to premiere, and they know that the game can only succeed with high participation. Since no one answered your question ... I have limited knowledge of the mystery game myself. Are you talking about McDonald's Monopoly or the $5 game? I would suppose someday ... if the new game continues to lose money, then they might pull the plug on it.

There are still more states waiting to join in 2015 so I imagine it will go on for the new year. Perhaps 2016 will be another matter ... I really don't know how long they can operate the game at a loss, somebody is going to have to keep put... [ More ]

I too had to fight off the strong temptation to spend more than I knew I should on raffle tickets.

What I did to get around it was to get a group of seven guys at work (plus myself) to form a pool. We each threw in 40 bucks and bought a total of sixteen tickets. While that does reduce a jackpot win to $125,000 per pool member (before taxes) at least forming a pool satisfied my urge to splurge. G5

The hot lotto game available in a few states is an advertised tax free jackpot. The taxes are

getting paid but at least the advertised jackpot is what you get. No homework/guess work involved.

I think the monopoly games should be transformed into a weekly $5 raffle game with a guarenteed

xx amount of millionaires based on xx amount of sales.

Indeed, every state (or more correctly, vendor) maintains their own file. This is simply because not all lotteries use the same vendor(s). They transfer this to MUSL's centralized servers via a secure connection, and it's pretty much automated. I too have tried similar. Won zilch. Needless to say, I still buy a few, but not many. Heck, the last raffle, I only bought one. 2006 sounds about right. PA Lottery even resorted to discounting the raffle tickets - don't recall the exact promotion, but it amounted to about two dollars off. Not much, but guess it made the difference, because they sold out just under the wire. PA never did that again - been 500,000 ever since.

I do have a question for LottoMetro (or anyone) ... so the number of millionaires went from 16 to 18 for next Friday ... is this a fixed total with no change if sales are up ... like they do for PB and MM as ticket sales increase on a large jackpot? As a CPA, I appreciate the detailed explanation of the odds on the MMC game. From a practical perspective, I do not foresee the ticket sales doubling anytime soon (the lotto operators at the stores still don't even know what I am talking about every time I try to buy a ticket for this game). I pretty much did the same thing as you a few years back with that raffle. Pick up a few here and there.

Next thing I knew I had 25 tickets as well with nothing to show, LMAO.

Right now for new years one I have 2 and might pick up 2-3 more but as someone pointed

out to me earlier is that the Quinto game has better odds at a Mil then the raffle. Quinto is fixed

at $50,000 per win. You buy $20 of the same number and the odds come in at 1-100,000.

Well, the 1.28 million tickets was a doubling sales scenario. MUSL actually only projects $3,135,234 in sales for next Friday (and they actually overestimated this past drawing), which means the odds would be 1 in 34,835.93 given there is a top prize winner. But I think it's important to stress given there is a top prize winner. Those odds sound great, but that is basically cherry-picking with the idea that you would get those odds. Interesting info. The total number of tickets sold in the past drawing was only 643,408? The top prize is maxed out, and yet the number of tickets sold is trending down. Not a good sign. I can't imagine sales doubling, and then again and again to upwards of 10,000,000 tickets in just 4 drawings. Maybe it will happen, in which case MMC proves itself being profitable, and MUSL is vindicated in their choices of how the game is structured. I share your interest or no interest in the tv show. I bought my second ticket last week ... my decision was to wait till the $25 million limit was hit and then cover the game ... decided to play the week before when it was $21 million. I didn't realize that two out of five numbers would give your $5 back ... Good point about wheeling. It can still be done, but due to the computer generated property number would take a lot more than 28 tickets to do it. Or maybe not depending on the state and terminal one uses to purchase them. Presumably, in many states, the terminal itself generates the property number. There could be ways to game this, and possibly purchase all 28 property combinations without buying too many extra tickets.

I suspect they are getting deeply discounted rooms plus a discount on airfare. So the value to the winner for tax purposes is probably different than what they are actually having to spend. Still, it adds up to a lot of money.

Well NY and FL also had the biggest chunk of sales. Like I said, it's proportional, but there isn't supposed to be more than 6 winners unless there is an excess availability of funds. The trip is worth $6500, and there are 254 attendees (plus those in the 2 states that haven't reported yet), which means the liability is $1,651,000 and counting. Not to mention the available $2.5 million on the actual game show. They are definitely operating in the red.

I think this is because your property number on the ticket shows up on the game board when you enter for the drawing.

On a side note, the number of winners per state is definitely more than 6 and while I expected an additional number in proportion to sales, it doesn't seem to make sense according to the rules (or my understanding thereof). Smart indeed. However, that comes with a huge caveat ... it assumes MMC game isn't rigged. While highly unlikely, the issue can't be ignored. Especially, in light of various problems with randomizers in the past - search the forums for more details of past incidents.

Can someone please explain this lottery name drawing. I checked the results yesterday. Two states have no names listed for the Vegas trip. It just says Lottery Winner Notified. Do all States not have to wait to hear back to post the names.

It defies logic to believe all people except in those two States have provided their information in order to have their name disclosed.

Reason I say that is many tickets, likely including some winning $1 million ones, were entered into the Vegas trip giveaway. In effect, some of the unclaimed $1 million dollar winners are essentially registered tickets with the MSUL and respective participating states already knowing the identity of those winners.

Interesting observation. Brings into question whether many players understand the $1 million raffle part of the game - if many don't, the MMC game is already doomed, since the raffle is an important aspect of the game to make it standout from other large jackpot (aka top prize ) games that sell at lower price-points.

Minimum 6 picked per state, computerized random drawing. Basically pool all the valid entries from the system and tell it to choose X winners (state-by-state).

Maryland sold 186,438 tickets up until last Friday's drawing. I estimate about 200,000 until the second-chance cutoff yesterday. The problem with what you suggest is that it contradicts the motive of a lottery: award the most value, least often. The lottery wouldn't make any money if people won every draw. So where's the detail on how the game show works? -or is that still a work in progress? I realize most players likely don't care one way or the other about the exact game show rules and payouts, but to me, the lack of clarity in that regard is troublesome; raises questions about the transparency and integrity of the overall MMC game.

I should also point out that this was back in May. I can't remember when they decided to add the bonus property(s) feature. I'm not joking when I say they were still making changes about a month or two before launch. I still haven't read through everything about it. The amount of internal content for this game, mostly documents, is close to a gigabyte (and for those kinds of files that is a lot). But 5.6 sounds pretty good so I'm assuming the bonus was factored in.

The same way they can set the payout % for fixed prizes in the base game, despite not knowing how many people will win!

People who win the game show will basically do it by luck. Using the probabilities of winning each of the games, the designers can calculate their expected value depending on the prize awarded.
