Something to keep in mind about the annuity also is that the final value is based on the interest rate (technically the yield bid by the treasury trust) for the following business day when the jackpot is hit (i.e. Saturday would use Monday rates, not Friday). Amazing how even $300 million advertised annuity jackpots aren't exciting. Main reason seems to be jackpot fatigue - it's no longer new, etc. Also many players now perceive the odds of winning to be not just astronomical, but rather seemingly impossible (especially so with Mega Millions after its matrix change). If no winner Saturday, jackpot will be $317 annuitized.

I initially speculated we would see half a billion for Valentine's Day but as you say, sales have only been modest. I expect around $425-$450 million for the holiday if it continues rolling without a winner until then. MUSL is projecting roughly $400 million for the draw before so I dunno, maybe the frenzy will kick in and drive it up.

At that point they might be optimistic that the final tally will be a bit higher, but it means they're currently planning on an increase of $33 million, which is only a modest increase from the current $28 million and the previous (optimistic) $31 million.

If it rolls after 322 maybe we'll start to see fairly big jumps. We might see a half billion or so for Valentine's Day if it gets that far.

Extremely unlikely. The previous increase was advertised as $31 million (annuity value), but the actual sales were only enough fo an increase of about $27 million. That means the current increase of $28 million they're advertising now is really a slightly bigger increase (last night's $261 million would have been a bit less than 261). Getting to $300 million would require a far bigger increase than the MUSL people expect, and their recent expectations have already been a bit optimistic.

No mistake, there will be a 10X. The multiplier will only apply to prizes from the 3rd tier and lower. No multiplied jackpot or 2nd prize. Are you saying they would take 250 million off the top for those people leaving 50 million for the jackpot winner? If so i quess they found a way to SPREAD IT AROUND a little bit. Greed definitely drives part of it, but at the same time I understand their position. States get used to the revenues that come in during and after high jackpot runs. Many states depend on Powerball and Mega Millions alone for 50% or more of their total revenue. I'm not afraid to call them idiots for vesting so much into jackpot draw games though. They really are out of touch with reality and the discussions that take place during conferences are evidence of that.

Income has fallen the past year to ridiculously low levels. For some states, which depend on the lottery always bringing in more year after year, this was a big pain and they hinted very strongly that they needed more. The lottery complied by destroying the odds further for jackpot winners thinking they would sucker in more people to play the game as the chances of it rolling will be as high as the MM now. I'm a jackpot player and now will be playing PB less than I even did last year.

I read the info regarding upcoming changes and yea i agree that changing the setup will hurt ticket sales with lower jackpots no doubt. i think the matrix should stay where it is. if they want to change something then just change the powerplay itself only to new format and add the second drawing like they plan using existing matrix instead of making things worse.

I'm pretty sure the only thing they're interested in is maximizing their profit, and they figured out along time go that really big jackpots sell a hell of a lot of tickets. They have to know that raising the odds that high is going to reduce the number of tickets they sell for modest jackpots, but they're hoping to make up for it with the unusually big jackpots.

Hoping isn't going change a thing. I think both multi-state games are interested in pushing the envelope of what players will put up with before they stop playing. Once that point is reached, they will step back and redesign the game to something similar to what they had just before reaching that point.

That's what happen in Ohio with their $2 Lot'O Play game with a 6/100 matrix. After a year they came out with Classic Lotto(6/49) for $1.

Megamillions was finally won so more people played Powerball tonight. If you look at previous players winning there was an increase of almost 150,000 winners.
