The moral balance sheet of the British Empire is a chaotic mixture of black and red. So it is understandable that people today, trying to evaluate this momentous episode in our island story, are confused. Take the New Labour government, for example. After a trip to East Africa, Gordon Brown, former UK Prime Minister, said that the days of Britain having to apologize for its colonial history are over . Indeed, he asserted, we should be proud of the Empire.

Most were not criminals by today's standards. The UK's real motive was to clean up London by removing the poor.

There was a time the British had colonized nearly half of the world so that they could exploit people and their natural resources and brutalized the inhabitants who tried to resist their invasion really bad. there is nothing to be proud of in that
