The annual exclusion gifts don t count towards the lifetime gift exemption.

A little confusing, but that's because the estate exemption and the lifetime gift exemption are basically one and the same. If you gave away five million bucks in your lifetime, your estate could only exempt .43 million from taxes.

That's the annual gift exclusion, but you can also give away $5.43 million tax free in your lifetime w/ the federal estate tax exemption, doubled to $10.86 million for a married couple. A husband and wife (or married partners) can each give a gift of $14k to someone with no limit to the number of individuals they can gift. Talk with your tax lawyer and CPA Certified Public Accountant before gifting any large amount of cash. The IRS has rules and regulations for gifting. You could even call the IRS 1-800-1040

I only have a handful of close friends, and they have been around me at my lowest and my pre-lottery best. It'd be awfully hard to hide from them the change in lifestyle. The first time I showed up to go horseback riding and I had a new truck and trailer, and my horse has fresh shoes, they will be awfully suspicious and know I've stumbled onto a financial boost.

I don't think I'd be able to hide any significant win. Unless I broke off contact and moved out of state. But I don't know why I'd want to do that. When I dream of winning, my friends are included in the dream. A few close friends that is, not everyone I know. Not planning any big vacations, but new cars and paid-off mortgages.

Sounds like I am with the rest of you, I have a handful of friends, most of which I have had for many, many years. I choose to help the few relatives I have and would more than likely travel with these friends and family as plans come up. A very select few people in my circle .

I live in a relatively small town in a non-anonymous claiming state, so friends and foes alike will know if I won. I honestly would not care who knew.

Just as with most everything else in my life, I've always preferred quality over quantity, so I don't have many friends but the ones I do have are good ones. I doubt I'd take anyone on an all-expense paid trip, but I'd love to be able to help a few who really need it.

I'll bet lots of friendships ended when jackpot winners failed to do what their former friends expected them to do. On the other hand a few years ago, a co-worker won a nice jackpot and gave 11 of his golf buddies an all-expenses-paid 5 day golf trip to Mesquite, NV and 4 nights in Vegas.

It would depend on how much I won. Under $10 million I don't think we would tell anyone. I think we could keep any lifestyle change underwraps. Over $10 million I would probably tell immediate family and one close friend. I think people might notice the slightly more lavish living. I probably would pay for some travel if they knew.
