NYC may be the absolute worst place to win a lottery jackpot, but you know what??? I don't care if they take almost 48% in taxes since I will be left with 52% of a multi-million dollar prize that I didn't have before.

I will take 52% of tonight's $348 mil ($226.1 mil cash value) jackpot and laugh all the way to the bank.

Giving partial or full name is nothing compare to what NY lotto does to winners. NYC is the absolute worst place to win, not only u lose 1/3 to fed tax, u have to pay state even local tax. If that's not bad enough, there's a mandatory press conference if u win 1 million bucks or more. NY lotto will make sure everyone on the planet knows who u r.

I am surprised no winners in NY have been murdered yet like in FL.

I think it was savagegoose that once posted an Australian lottery ticket is $1.03 AUS, the .03 prepays the tax for the winner.

Also, the play slips have a NP (No Publicity) box you can check and that takes care of that.

The U.S. could learn an awful lot from that.

As myturn stated, the US should adopt those policies.

Each state has it's own specific rules about what information is exempt from the FOIA. Most states make the name and hometown of winners public information. Additionally, even states that don't require winners to attend the dog pony show may still have a requirement allowing the use of their likeness . All of that information would then be available through the FOIA as public information.

Illinois puts winners pictures and first names on monitors at lotto outlets.

They used to put full names and hometowns but stopped that after Abraham Shakespeare got killed.

As gwurston mentioned I'm pretty sure if you won you wouldn't bee too concerned about others' right to know.

Depends which state they won in. Most states will give out full name and city of residence if requested. There are only a handful that won't.
