If I told you there was a new game out that had a 1 in 5 TRILLION odds of winning, yet someone wins the JP every month, would you still say Why not me? .

My point is, is there a limit of how hard a game has to be before you say to yourself that the probability of me winning the JP is so low that it's not worth spending the money? Those that buy just one of a few tickets and win, is it being at the right place and the right time and buying the soon to be winning ticket.

You ask for insert amount here tickets and one of those is going to win the jackpot.

Is it luck or fate? Most say luck because it deals with chance, but fate brought you to the place at the time you bought the ticket. Yes, I know it's complicated.

If someone is likely to win, does one player have some sort of leg up or advantage over everyone else?

All it takes is one ticket with the right numbers to win. I have seen big pools buy 1,000 or more tickets for these big $500+ million drawings and not even get a $50 return on investment, but yet some people buy one or just a few tickets and win it all.

Until the results of the drawings, it was much more likely that ticket wouldn't match a number. That being said because of number of tickets sold it was very likely at least one ticket would win the jackpot. Self picks have the same chance of winning as QPs, but many more QPs are sold and why the majority of jackpot winners are QPs. Because the tickets are bought before the drawing, there is no way of knowing which ticket if any will match the drawing. I'm not sure if the word luck really describes how difficult it is for one ticket to match the one combination out over a quarter billion. If the jackpot winners are lucky, are the players who winning nothing unlucky ?

In the Gloria McKenzie case, regardless of whether the local lottery machine or the main system server hosts the PRNG program that selects quick picks (does anyone know which part of the system selects the QP's?), it was a timing event of milliseconds that gave Gloria McKenzie the numbers on those tickets. There is no guarantee that the woman behind her would have received the same selections if she had kept her place.

Luck = timing.

Good luck is being in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing that leads to the outcome you desire.

That also means someone can win the jackpot in the first draw or first few draws let's say under $100million. The luck portion of it is probably better suited as 'luck of the draw' but, that's only my opinion which is also strongly supported by the odds in question. Interesting topic. I suppose it all depends on the situation and your perspective. Let's say you over sleep and are running late for work. You need to punch in by 7:00. Every traffic light you come to on your route is green and you punch in at 6:59. You may say, I was lucky to get here on time. Which is good luck.

Your Thread Is Asking us To decide Whether It's Luck or Fate. I can only speak for myself by saying Fate has nothing to do with it. If fate chose Jack, did it foresee the mess that would follow? As the saying goes...Good news travels fast, but bad news travels faster.

I guess this is why we hear more about the bad that has come from people winning and then losing lottery fortunes and not as much about people who have won and live happily ever after . Those are the ones that claimed as a trust, changed their address and phone number and live a low key life without attracting attention.

Jack Whittaker did not use his money wisely. He tried to buy his Grand-daughter with money and all she did was buy drugs that she ended up taking her life with.

I know he was already a millionaire. What changed in him to do the things he did with the lottery money as opposed to the money he already had

Take for instance the Robinsons in TN. John wasn't feeling well and wasn't going to stop and buy tickets for the $1.6 Bil Powerball drawing. His wife Lisa called and reminded him to stop and get tickets. He does stop and buys just 4 $2 tickets. They win a 1/3 share of lottery history jackpot.

Which is it...You purchase a ticket with numbers that will match those that are drawn (since all tickets have the same chance) or the numbers that are drawn match the numbers on the ticket you purchased?

Without knowing the winning numbers for the next drawing, you unwittingly are walking around with a ticket in your wallet that will be worth millions of dollars in a couple of days.

Nothing you do can change the fact that you will win.

I think it's a combination of both luck and fate.

One of the quotes in your post describes something that I think is key, and that's persistence. How many times have you read a quote by a winner that basically says; I've played the lottery for years but I only won small prizes. ? That's my story. That's everybody's story. G5
