I will play neither until something is done about the deplorable lower- and middle-tier prizes. Some of those prizes, I have much better odds of getting with the Pick-3.

Actually, let me qualify that. Three things have to happen for me to play. 1) I must be in a state whose state games use ball drawings. 2) The jackpot must be a Top 5 jackpot. 3) The drawing for said Top 5 jackpot must be held on a major holiday or on my birthday or on February 29.

If the fantasy of 1 in 12,607,306 odds is acceptable, a Mega Millions with Megaplier 5+0 win (excluding pari-mutuel California) would yield $2-$5 million . . around $1.26 to $3.15 million after 37% federal taxes.

Thanks Music. I buy one PB w/powerplay and one FL lotto w/extra. I used to buy 3 to 5 tickets but I reduced my lottery budget to one ticket each. I win more now it seems and I throw away less money.

To me PB and MM are the same game so I usually play the higher jackpot. With that said, I can count on two fingers how many times I won on MM.

When they both were just 1$/pick, I would play multiple lines of both. Now that they are both 2$ I just play 1 set of numbers and since it appears that computer picks win just as well... I let the computer do the work for me and rest my tired brain.

As of the most recent Mega Millions matrix change on 10/28/17, its starting jackpot is $40 million (annuity value).

Why choose between them? Play both.

The starting amount for Mega Millions is $15 million - Annuity. If you choose the lump sum you will keep a bit over $5 million after deductions and taxes.

The starting level for Power Ball is $40 million - Annuity. Here you will keep about $15 million after deductions and taxes when you select the Lump Sum.

Power Ball does have the advantage with the $40 million starting point because if you play advance play your ticket will still win about $15

Both of these games are way out of reach for a dream of winning. In the past I have spent a lot of time trying to guess sets of winning numbers without much success other than getting an occasional 3 white balls, or 2 white balls and the mega or powerball. Now that the odds have really gone up, I just buy a quick pick ticket and pay the extra dollar for the powerplay or megaplier so that if I do get lucky to win something, the payout will be multiplied.
