I went to the website, IRS.gov After a major win I will be able to afford the counsel of an attorney, CPA, or an enrolled agent EA.

So much more responsibility comes with a win. The gift tax-free amount will be the same in 2019 as it is now in 2018. $15,000.00

April 15, 2019, is on a Monday.

We are all worried about the crazies.

The media and the vast majority of people are at most a minor annoyance for perhaps a month. It's the tiny percentage of people who remain too interested after a month that would be bothersome. I will encourage the media to ask long-winded questions. Any way to burn time.

Everyone attending the press conference is hoping for a fun and entertaining experience. The press is not looking for an answer to a Gotcha question. Smile and laugh with everyone.

Being that I live in New York, I will have to do the press conference thing once I win.

I will keep it short and sweet. Give them just enough to satisfy their interest and be on my way to the bank.

One of the advantages of coming forward is that I can put Lottery Post in my story. Another advantage is that the media will be satisfied with the interview and stop following me. I do live a boring life after all.

We are all worried about the crazies. We might have to hire help to protect us. To be proactive I can support local Charities that help these people. Help them come back into the mainstream of life.

Even the Illinois Lottery Superintendent complimented the winner for taking her time and getting help before coming forward to claim her prize.

Neither do I see any requirement to do the media interview in the CA Lottery Winner's Handbook.

Don't confuse the advice in the winner's handbook with the rules.

There are a lot of things about NY that I like, but the state government is a serious mess. Taking maximum advantage of lottery winners is part of the SOP in NY, so naturally they require you to do the dog and pony show because they think that will promote the lottery's interests. The States that offer a winner anonymity are leaders who will be followed. Especially when a tragedy happens to a winner in a non-anonymous State. We all hope that winners will be safe.

I believe that Illinois is a must do a press interview State. The couple who won in Red Bud, IL did the press interview.

Texas is the latest State to pass a law granting anonymity to winners of a million or more dollars.

Anyone else have info on other states? I really don't have time to visit each site but I think all LPers reading this thread can chip in with their state's rules, to give us a clearer picture of which states suck balls in this regard.

oate, No I do not have a link to the NY Lottery website.

I do appreciate your positive view of California Lottery rules. Neither do I see any requirement to do the media interview in the CA Lottery Winner's Handbook.

When the time is ripe I will contact the Lottery and get direct answers.

This is why I ask questions on Lottery Post. You have lit another candle.

They weren't excused from doing a media appearance because they were never required to do one in the first place. I am not seeing any such requirement in the CA Lottery Winner's Handbook. They only say that your name and where you bought the winning ticket are subject to disclosure (e.g., a journalist or someother requests it.)

I don't think a required press interview means the media surrounding your home.

As far as I know those interviews are usually at the lottery headquarters.

I'm also curious which states have a media appearance requirement in their fine print.

My state (CA) makes the names public record, but you have to contact the lottery to request the info. The only winners' stories they publish on their website are the ones who agreed to do it. So far they have only published the stories of 17 winners who won in 2018, which includes scratchers winners, so it looks like only a small fraction are willing to do a media appearance.

Each State is different. I am playing in California. There have been past winners who were excused from the press interview. For example, Marvin and Mae Acosta held the third winning ticket for the record Power Ball jackpot drawn Wednesday, January 13, 2016, We only know their names. They moved away from Chino Hills, CA

New York requires a press interview. Yolanda Vega the celebrated interviewer will help you as much as she can.

If you live in a State that requires you to do a media availability interview how will you cope? Would you relax and enjoy the press interview? Thankful for your 15 minutes of fame.
